Prime Video Cancels The Peripheral and A League of Their Own

Summary

  • Amazon Prime Video has decided to cancel the renewal of The Peripheral and A League of Their Own due to ongoing strikes in Hollywood, causing major production delays.
  • The Peripheral, based on the novel by William Gibson, was a popular series with a 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. The cancelation comes as a surprise.
  • A League of Their Own, based on the movie and a true story, was renewed for a final season with only four episodes for closure, but it has also been canceled. The cancelation may be confusing for fans.

Amazon Prime Video has decided to revert their decision of renewing both of The Peripheral and A League of Their Own due to the current strikes in Hollywood, which would have brought major delays in the production of both series.

Based on the novel by the same name written by William Gibson, The Peripheral premiered on the streaming platform on October 2022, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Jack Reynor, Gary Carr, Eli Goree, Louis Herthum, JJ Feild, T’Nia Miller, Charlotte Riley, Alexandra Billings, Adelind Horan, Alex Hernandez, Katie Leung, and Julian Moore-Cook

The Peripheral centers on Flynne Fisher, a girl who lives in a rural zone in the South of America and works at a 3D printing company to earn some money to play VR games. One night, while playing, Flynne is transported to a futuristic version of London, only to find out she’s not actually in a game but in a real world.

The series was very well received and became one of the biggest hits of the platforms from last year. It currently has a 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics, with a 86% from the audience, so the cancelation reported by Variety is definitely a surprise.

A League of Their Own Won’t Have Its Conclusion

A League of Their Own is based on the popular movie of the same name, which itself was based on a real-life story, and premiered in August 2022, but it took several months for Prime Video to finally announce its continuation, and it seems it came with a catch.

The streaming platform did renew the show earlier this year, but it seems like this won’t happen. Variety has also reported that the sports drama won’t continue despite the renewal.

The story follows a group of woman who are recruited to play baseball during War World II, since men won’t be able to participate while representing their country in the battlefield. Taking a way more serious tone than the movie, the series explored sexual diversity, discrimination and segregation among many other sensitive social topics. A League of Their Own starred Abbi Jacobson, D’Arcy Carden, Kelly McCormack, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Priscilla Delgado, Chanté Adams, Roberta Colindrez, Melanie Field, and Nick Offerman.

Once again, the outlet states that their sources claim this wave of cancelations is mostly due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, with writers being unable to work on the scripts, which would push the start of production way into the future. While this doesn’t entirely rule out a revival of these series somewhere down the line, it appears that many studios are starting to cut their losses on a number of shows and shut up shop rather than wait any longer for a resolution to the strikes.
