Even though they have stepped down as senior royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are still on good terms with Queen Elizabeth II. During their explosive tell-all with Oprah Winfrey on March 7, the couple shed light on what their relationship is currently like with the reigning monarch. After Meghan recalled their “lovely” first meeting, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex set the record straight, saying they did not blindside the queen when they announced their royal exit in January 2020. “I never blindsided my grandmother. I have too much respect for her,” Harry said.
During another point in the interview, Harry revealed, “I’ve spoken more to my grandmother in the last year than I have done for many, many years.” He also confirmed that they’ve done a few Zoom calls with their 1-year-old son Archie. “My grandmother and I have a really good relationship and understanding. I have a deep respect for her. She’s my commander-in-chief, right?”
Meghan also revealed that she personally called the queen after learning that Prince Philip was recently hospitalized. “This morning, I woke up earlier than H, and saw a note from someone on our team in the UK saying that the Duke of Edinburgh had gone to the hospital, but I just picked up the phone and I called the queen just to check in,” Meghan told Oprah. “That’s what we do.”
Prior to the Oprah interview, Harry revealed that the queen sent Archie a waffle maker for Christmas because he loves having waffles for breakfast. So, based on what Harry and Meghan have shared so far, we’d say their relationship with the queen is still going strong.
