Marvel sequel Avengers: Secret Wars is still far away on Disney and Marvel Studios’ constantly moving calendar, but the companies may already be looking for someone to put in charge of one of the next crossover films from the MCU. Could Deadpool 3 Shawn Levy be the one?
The first Merc with a Mouth movie released in 2016 and was directed by Tim Miller. The second one came out in 2018 with David Leitch at the helm. But now that the character is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Reynolds wanted a familiar face for the third film. Levy has not only already worked with the actor in The Adam Project and Free Guy, he has also been part of the Disney and Fox families with projects like Cheaper by Dozen, the Night at the Museum saga and Real Steel, one of his most acclaimed titles.
However, Deadpool 3 is sure to be a huge challenge for the filmmaker, especially because it’ll be the first ever R-rated movie within the franchise. If things go as planned, Levy could have a bright future at Marvel Studios, and that’s probably why recent rumors have claimed that he is a top candidate to direct Avengers: Secret Wars. In an interview with ET Canada, the director coyly addressed those rumors:
“I read that rumour, and that’s all I’m gonna say.”
Levy hasn’t been the only one attached to the project lately. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi and acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron are also among the names Marvel Studios reportedly wants for Avengers: Secret Wars.

Why Is Avengers: Secret Wars So Important for the MCU?
Marvel Studios
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is built in such a way that each project is extremely relevant, especially to understand each of the stories – even individually. This has become even more evident in recent years, with the arrival of the various Disney+ shows.
The Avengers crossover movies have a central role within this order, as they bring together most of the franchise’s heroes in one big event. Avengers: Secret Wars will be no exception, and it will also mark the end of ‘The Multiverse Saga’, and could even lead the entire universe to a major reboot, possibly opening the door to a new direction for the franchise.
Marvel’s Secret Wars is a series of 12 comic books published between 1984 and 1985, created by Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck, and Bob Layton. The story centers on a powerful entity known as The Beyonder, who kidnaps a large group of heroes and villains from the Marvel Comics universe and forces them to fight each other on a plant called Battleworld.
The interesting thing is that most of the characters he takes are part of the Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four, and the two last groups are finally joining the MCU in upcoming projects, so it would make a lot of sense for Marvel Studios to adapt this particular story even if it is not exactly the way it is presented in the pages.
Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to be released on May 7, 2027, while Deadpool 3 is due to hit theaters on May 3, 2024.
