Harry Potter is making its way back to screens, but this time won’t be a cinematic experience. The Wizarding World created by J. K. Rowling is being adapted into a television series at MAX. This time around though, the new adaptation will be looking to revive the franchise and present a version much more faithful to the source material.
It was June 1997 when, after many rejections from several publishers, the story that the British author started writing on a napkin finally saw the light. At that moment, the writer never imagined that more than 25 years later, life would imitate art and that just as the pages of the books predicted, there’s no child in the world that doesn’t know Harry Potter’s name.
But although the story of The Boy Who Lived became a literary hit, their success may not have been the same if they had not been adapted to film. In 2001, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone hit theaters, and the franchise became a global phenomenon.
Sales of the novels reached ridiculously high numbers, with fans forming long lines to get their hands on each new installment as soon as possible. Meanwhile, movie theaters were packed year after year whenever a new film was released. Harry Potter invaded the world of video games, toys, and even Broadway marquees. And now it will also be looking to dominate the world of streaming platforms.
When Warner Bros. Discovery broke the news about the development of the new show barely a decade after the end of the movie saga, some were not sure if this was a good idea, and others were quick to air their grievances around J.K. Rowling and her controversial comments around the Trans community. But most of them were happy to get to live the adventure once again with new versions of Harry, Ron and Hermione, mainly because the series will be able to include many things the movies left aside. And the studio wants to make sure this happens.
David Heyman Teases “Something Very Special” for the Harry Potter Series
Warner Bros.
Just as Percy Jackson fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new Disney+ series, followers of the Wizarding World await the revelations about the Harry Potter series. However, they will have to wait a little bit more.
Speaking with Total Film (courtesy of GamesRadar), producer David Heyman confirmed that production is not too far along yet, but he has high expectations for the show:
“[On Harry Potter] It’s early days. We haven’t even hired a writer to begin writing. It’s a bit early. But hopefully [it will be] something that’s very special, and gives us an opportunity to see the books, and to enjoy a series which explores the books more deeply.”
Heyman wasn’t the only one who spoke about the franchise in the last couple of days. David Yates, who was in charge of most of the film adaptations of the main saga and directed all the Fantastic Beasts movies, revealed if he would be up to helm any new project from the Wizarding World (via Deadline):
“We haven’t had a conversation since we finished it. It’s been about ‘let’s just park it and be done for a while.’ Never say never, I would say.”
