Claypool: Bears not using me to the best of my ability

Another key player on the Chicago Bears seems to have taken a shot at the team’s coaching staff.

When asked if he believes he’s been put in the best position to succeed, wide receiver Chase Claypool paused before responding: “No.”

Claypool, who was acquired last season for a second-round pick in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has struggled to make an impact in Chicago. He’s averaged 19.1 yards in 10 games. This season, Claypool has caught just four passes for 51 yards.

“I wouldn’t say it’s not an ideal place for me,” Claypool said, according to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin. “Obviously, there’s other places (where) you can say, ‘Oh, I want to be on the best offense with the highest passing yards,’ but that doesn’t happen in football. You have to make do with what you got.”

He added that it’s up to the coaching staff to figure out how to use him best.

“I’m not going to give any pointers,” Claypool said. “That’s their job to decide, and I’ll just do what they tell me to do.”

Justin Fields recently appeared to suggest he was being overcoached, though the quarterback later walked back his remarks and said they were taken out of context.

Chicago has failed to get its offense going amid an 0-3 start to the 2023 campaign. The Bears are averaging just 15.7 points per game. Their passing attack’s 148.3 yards per contest ranks 31st in the league.
