Is Meryl Streep Returning for Only Murders in the Building Season Four?

Summary

  • Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for a fourth season, solidifying its status as one of Hulu’s top series.
  • Fans are eager to know if Meryl Streep will return for the new season after her important role in season three.
  • The creators of the show have teased the possibility of a setting change for the series, which could bring new twists and challenges to the storyline.

On the same day that its third season was airing the final episode, Only Murders in the Building was renewed for a fourth installment, reaffirming its title as one of Hulu’s most successful series. But the most recent season of the acclaimed comedy has set the bar very high, especially due to the presence of Meryl Streep as part of the main cast. Therefore, fans are wondering if the actress will return for the new episodes to maintain the high level of quality.

Created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, Only Murders in the Building follows three true-crime fans who live in the same building on the Upper East Side of New York. Their lives and their passion for crime stories come together when a real murder happens in their building, which encourages them to create their own podcast to solve the mystery behind what happened. Starring Martin himself, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, the series was a hit since its premiere in 2021, due to its fun story, inventive script, its satire of the true crime genre and also for the large number of guest actors who paraded through the show.

Among them is none other than Meryl Streep, who had a very important role in the third installment. In the finale, Loretta (Streep’s character) informs her partner Oliver (Short) that she is going to Los Angeles to continue her acting career with Tobert (Jesse Williams), which seemed to be the end of their respective relationships with Oliver and Mabel (Gomez). However, both protagonists responded that they would visit them to support their careers, so a future appearance by Streep is not ruled out.

Speaking with TVLine about the future of the show, Hoffman addressed the chances of seeing the actress again in the upcoming season:

“I have to share my Instagram post that I typically post to tee up the week’s episode. It became a thing I started doing, and there’s a photo that we have of Meryl at her wrap for Season 3. She’s saying the most lovely things to our beautiful crew about the time she had, and she has her arms up and says, “I can’t wait for Season 4!” It was this very delightful gesture, and we were like, “What?!” I mean, we would love it. Both Meryl and Jesse, and everyone we have on the show, have very fruitful work lives. Nothing would make me happier, so yes, that is a wish I have for them because of what they created.”

Could Only Murders in the Building Move to LA?

Hulu

The stars of Only Murders in the Building may be Martin, Short and Gomez, but there’s no doubt that its large cast of supporting characters are just as important to making the series work. So, with two characters as relevant as Loretta and Tobert leaving for Los Angeles, and with Oliver and Mabel promising to visit them from time to time, could Only Murders in the Building present a new case in another city?

In the same interview, Hoffman talked about a potential change of setting for the series:

“I love New York — the characters, the richness, the depth is endless — and it’s a New York show. But I don’t want to be afraid of things that make you go, ‘What?’ ‘Where are we?’ ‘Where are they now?’ I think you have to do that so it doesn’t feel too insular. There is our apartment building, and much like how we want to get out and be in New York as much as possible, I think you also have to remember this trio and the potential for whatever would be happening in their lives that might lead them to go away for some reason.”

There is no doubt that a change of setting would be an interesting challenge for the series, but Only Murders in the Building can also find other ways to surprise audiences with its fourth season, even staying in New York.
