The Eras Tour Adds Nearly $6 Million Thursday, Killers of the Flower Moon Falls Short of $3 million in Previews

Summary

  • Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour surpassed Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon at the box office on Thursday.
  • The Eras Tour made over twice as much money as Killers of the Flower Moon, with $5.9 million in the United States.
  • While Killers of the Flower Moon may have an advantage during the weekdays, The Eras Tour is predicted to win this weekend, with forecasted earnings between $30 million and $40 million.

Even with Leonardo DiCaprio’s star power, the first round of the box office competition goes to Taylor Swift. The singing sensation’s concert film made over twice as much money as director Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon did on Thursday. What’s even more interesting is that Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is entering its second weekend of release, while Scorsese’s three-hour+ epic is debuting this weekend. But the novelty of being a new movie still wasn’t enough for Killers of the Flower Moon to win over The Eras Tour on Thursday.

Killers of the Flower Moon put up respectable numbers during its preview screenings on Thursday, October 19, with a take of $2.6 million domestically (per Deadline). And the highly anticipated crime drama will have the luxury of opening in over 3,600 venues during its first weekend. But Scorsese’s triumphant return to cinemas isn’t likely to win against Swift — and the early numbers are already bearing that out.

Thursday was far kinder to Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, as loyal Swifties continued to turn out in droves to see the movie musical. The Eras Tour went head-to-head with Killers of the Flower Moon on October 19 and won the day easily over Scorsese’s latest cinematic venture: The Eras Tour banked over twice as much money in the United States with $5.9 million.

The debut of Killers of the Flower Moon couldn’t beat Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour on Thursday, even though the concert film is entering its second weekend of release. The Eras Tour also has the advantage of playing on more screens this weekend (3,800+), but director Martin Scorsese’s Western-set crime drama will have the opportunity to make up a little bit of ground next week.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday should be won easily by Killers of the Flower Moon — against the rest of the competition — because The Eras Tour only plays in theaters on Thursdays through Sundays. However, Swift’s musical is forecast to win the weekend with a total of somewhere between $30 million and $40 million. Meanwhile, Killers of the Flower Moon is realistically predicted to make somewhere in the $20 million to $25 million range. However, some sources like Boxoffice Pro have Scorsese’s crime drama approaching $40 million in the U.S.

The only real advantage Killers of the Flower Moon has over The Eras Tour is that Swift’s concert film is a limited-time engagement, which is currently scheduled to end on Sunday, November 5 — at the time of this writing. In the long run, Scorsese might end up having the last word over the singing sensation, but that in itself is still in question. Both Killers of the Flower Moon and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour are playing exclusively in theaters.
