Summary

  • Maddie Bosch’s character in Bosch: Legacy undergoes a transformation as she navigates her past and present dilemmas, showcasing the art of storytelling.
  • Despite enduring traumatic events, Maddie remains resilient and upholds her principles and moral compass, influenced by her parents.
  • Maddie’s sense of empathy and humanity will be tested as she becomes a rookie cop, coping with the realities of her job while staying true to her values.

Bosch: Legacy beautifully encapsulates the art of storytelling by showcasing the transformation of characters, especially evident in Madison Lintz‘s portrayal of Maddie Bosch as she navigates her history, convictions, and contemporary dilemmas.

From her early days, Maddie has always been a figure of resilience. She’s not just the daughter of the protagonist, but she has evolved from a mere student to a legal intern and now, she has taken the leap into the daunting world of the LAPD as a rookie cop. Yet, her journey to this point hasn’t been without its share of darkness. Maddie has endured a series of traumatic events, from being kidnapped to facing her father’s foes, losing her mother tragically, and a recent brush with a serial rapist.

One cannot help but wonder – with such weight on her shoulders, can Maddie still believe in the concept of righteousness? Can she still uphold her principles and maintain her moral compass, especially in a world that has shown her its ugliest face time and again?

Per Collider, Tom Bernardo, the showrunner and writer of Bosch: Legacy, shed some light on this during our discussion ahead of the series’ anticipated second season. He opened up about how Maddie’s traumatic experiences have undeniably shaped her perception of the world around her. Yet, it’s worth noting that Maddie’s beliefs and values aren’t solely derived from these tragic events. Her parents have profoundly shaped them: a father who was once a detective and a mother, previously an FBI agent.

Bernardo shared, “It’s definitely going to affect her. What was interesting to us is she’s her own character, but, of course, she carries a lot of who her father is with her, and her mother, and at the same time is her own person and is in the process of discovering who that person is now as a young adult in this world of LAPD, being a rookie patrol cop out on those streets. So it was interesting for us to look into what happens to your empathy as you’re in this world and seeing the realities of things on a daily basis.”

The essence of Maddie’s character, according to Bernardo, lies in her innate sense of empathy and humanity. Despite the recent traumatic episode of her abduction and subsequent rescue, Maddie’s moral foundation remains solid. Bernardo elaborates on the struggles she might face, adding:

“If that empathy matters to you and you have a certain code, what happens when you start to feel it numbing because that’s the only way to cope and get through the job sometimes and to do it effectively because you can’t be undone by your emotions on a daily basis? So, one of the things I’ve said that is important to us as storytellers is, what are the consequences when you put a character into something, and she experiences what she experiences in the first two episodes?”

It is indeed intriguing to watch a character navigate the tumultuous waters of trauma and duty. Maddie Bosch embodies the spirit of a warrior, constantly battling her past while staying true to her innate sense of justice.

For those eagerly waiting for the next installment, Bosch: Legacy will be available on Amazon Freevee, with new episodes streaming every Friday starting October 20 through November 10. Drawing from Maddie’s riveting tale, the show guarantees an emotional ride, profound contemplation, and an unmatched viewing delight.
