Jets’ Saleh: MNF loss far from Zach Wilson’s worst game

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh doesn’t see Monday’s game as a step in the wrong direction for Zach Wilson, who didn’t lead any touchdown drives and lost two fumbles during a 27-6 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

“I don’t know if you can say step back,” Saleh said postgame, according to the New York Post. “Obviously, he’s going to want some things that he wishes we could’ve done better. It’s just a little bit of everything. One of those bizarre games … Just a self-inflicted wound.

“Was it his best game? Obviously not. Was it his worst game? No, I’m not going to even say it was close to his worst game.”

Wilson was sacked eight times, the most in a game for him this season. The former No. 2 pick also completed 33 of 49 attempts for 263 yards, good for an 80.6 passer rating. Wilson’s 17.9 QBR against the Chargers was his second-lowest of the season, according to ESPN.

The Jets, who dropped to 4-4 with the loss, have now only scored three offensive touchdowns in their last four games. Running back Breece Hall said Monday that every player in New York’s offense has to “grow up,” adding that the team can’t have “one or two people killing the play,” according to SNY’s Connor Hughes.

The 24-year-old Wilson, who became New York’s starting quarterback this year after Aaron Rodgers went down with an Achilles injury in Week 1, also expressed his frustrations.

“I feel like I’m a different player,” Wilson said Monday, according to SNY. “I feel like I’m in the best position I’ve ever felt mentally and my understanding of the game. I feel like I’m ready to be out there and competing, so that’s what’s so frustrating. Just not getting things done.”

Wilson has failed to meet the sky-high expectations surrounding him since he entered the NFL in 2021, which led to the Jets – owners of an elite defense – acquiring Rodgers in a trade from the Green Bay Packers last offseason.
