  • Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” biopic is in high demand, with 4K and Blu-ray copies selling out quickly before the holidays.
  • Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is working to restock the discs at major retailers to meet the demand of movie-lovers.
  • The popularity of physical copies has led to high-priced resale, with “Steelcase” versions of “Oppenheimer” selling for as much as $200.

Director Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer becomes the new Cabbage Patch Kid or Buzz Lightyear toy as 4K and Blu-ray copies of the critically acclaimed biopic are selling out too quickly in the lead up to the holiday season. According to a report by Deadline, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is now “Oppenheimer 4K & Blu-Ray Sold Out, Universal Working to Restock Before Holidays of the Oppenheimer 4K Ultra HD discs at major retailers as movie-lovers scramble to grab a copy.

“We are happy so many consumers are embracing Oppenheimer in 4K Ultra HD and understand that some retailers may currently be out of stock,” the studio’s home entertainment division said in a statement. “Universal is working to replenish those retailers quickly so fans can watch the film at home in the best picture quality possible.”

The physical copy of Oppenheimer landed on shelves just last week, with the disc containing 3-hours of exclusive bonus material. Much like the theatrical release, which saw Oppenheimer gross over $952 million at the box office, the movie continues to be hugely popular and is now sold out at major retailers such as Best Buy and Amazon.

This has led to high-priced copies being re-sold, with the report stating that the ‘Steelcase’ versions of Oppenheimer “have been fetching as much as $200 a copy.”

So, once again, Christopher Nolan demonstrates that he knows what audiences want. The filmmaker has long been a supporter of physical movie releases, and clearly this sentiment has rubbed off on audiences. If nothing else, the image of a desperate father struggling to find a copy of Oppenheimer for his kid at Christmas conjures thoughts for a potential installment in the Jingle All the Way franchise…

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist credited with being the “father of the atomic bomb,” alongside a stacked cast that includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.

Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Oppenheimer explores the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer as he is appointed to lead the top-secret Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb, with the film leading audiences through the development, eventual use, and the impact that the bomb had on Oppenheimer’s life and wider history.

The news that so many are seeking out physical copies of Oppenheimer is sure to delight Nolan, who recently urged audiences to support physical media.

“‘The Dark Knight’ was one of the first films where we formatted it specially for Blu-ray release because it was a new form at the time. And in the case of ‘Oppenheimer,’ we put a lot of care and attention into the Blu-ray version […] and trying to translate the photography and the sound, putting that into the digital realm with a version you can buy and own at home and put on a shelf so no evil streaming service can come steal it from you.”
