Netflix has ordered a new anime remake of One Piece…before the original One Piece anime series has finished. To capitalize on the huge success seen by the streaming service’s live action remake of One Piece, the new anime series, titled The One Piece, the series will once again adapt the beloved manga and is now being developed by WIT Studio, best known for Attack on Titan and Spy x Family, for Netflix.

“An all-new anime adaptation of the ONE PIECE manga starting from the iconic East Blue saga is coming to Netflix!

Titled THE ONE PIECE, the anime series will be produced by the renowned WIT Studio, recognized for their work on hit anime such as SPY x FAMILY and Attack on Titan.”

In a joint statement, the committee behind the series expressed their enthusiasm for this “groundbreaking project,” which they have described as being “distinct from the TV anime series that has captivated audiences for over 25 years.”

“With THE ONE PIECE, the committee aims to provide viewers with a fresh yet familiar experience, utilizing cutting-edge visual technology to reimagine Luffy’s adventures through the beloved East Blue saga.”

Much like the anime and live action series before it, The One Piece will be based on the manga series of the same name by Eiichiro Oda. First released in 1997, One Piece follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as they explore the dangerous oceans, lands and beyond in search of the “One Piece”, a fabled treasure that will make their captain, Monkey D. Luffy, “King of the Pirates.”

With The One Piece, Netflix is looking to build on the success they found with their recent live action adaptation. While previous attempts to bring anime and manga franchises to live action have proven…mixed, One Piece received positive reviews from both critics and fans alike, with praise being heaped on the performances, visual effects, and the respect paid to the source material.

A second series of the live action One Piece is now in development, with the co-showrunner behind the series, Matt Owens, recently offering a promising update now that the writers’ and actor’s strikes have concluded.

“The writers room is up and running, yes, getting scripts done so that we can get into design work, scheduling and pre-production, all of that kind of stuff… We did start our Season 2 writers room for a little bit before the strike. We didn’t get much further than starting to plan out what the season is going to be and got a couple of outlines done. But that’s as far as we got. So there are not actually any scripts for the season that are done. It’s still going to take some time.”

As for the manga and anime series, One Piece is now entering its “Final Saga,” with creator Eiichiro Oda revealing in June last year that the manga will have a short break before returning for its 25th anniversary and finale.

Starring Iñaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Taz Skylar, the One Piece live action series is available to stream on Netflix.
