Zack Snyder Credits James Gunn for the Craziest Moment in His Debut Movie

Zack Snyder Credits James Gunn for the Craziest Moment in His Debut Movie

Summary

  • Zack Snyder and James Gunn worked together on the film Dawn of the Dead, with Gunn coming up with the idea for the memorable scene featuring a zombie baby.
  • Snyder credits Gunn for the idea, saying that he loved it and gives him full credit for it.
  • While Snyder and Gunn have had successful careers in the DC Comics world, it is unlikely that their paths will cross again within DC, as Snyder seems to have no interest in returning to the world of superheroes.

With the release of Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder has been reviewing his career, remembering his interesting filmography, including his first movie, Dawn of the Dead, which was written by none other than James Gunn. And it seems like one of the most iconic scenes was actually the idea of the current DC Studios CEO.

There’s no doubt that it’s very interesting to look back and see that the careers of Snyder and Gunn, who have become two of the most important men for the DC Comics world on screen, almost began together. Gunn had only worked on a few projects, such as Scooby-Doo, when he joined Snyder’s team in his directorial debut for the remake of George A. Romero’s horror classic, which is still remembered as one of Snyder’s best works.

And it seems like the duo worked very well together, creating a number of memorable scenes. Although there is one in particular, including a zombie baby, which was entirely Gunn’s idea. In a recent interview with Letterbox, Snyder credited his partner for that memorable sequence:

“That was a James Gunn idea a hundred percent, and I give him full credit for it. I loved it, by the way, so I thank him for it.”

It seems that the idea of zombie babies is one that has even crept into some of Snyder’s more recent work, with his movie Army of the Dead also including the arrival of a zombie baby, once again in a scene that became a stand-out shock moment of the film.

Dawn of the Dead is set in an apocalyptic reality where most of humanity has been turned into zombies, seeking to feed on the survivors. The plot focuses on a group of people who take refuge in a mall trying to stay safe. The movie stars Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, Mekhi Phifer, Ty Burrell, Michael Kelly, Kevin Zegers, Michael Barry, Lindy Booth, Jayne Eastwood, Boyd Banks, Inna Korobkina, R. D. Reid, Kim Poirier, Matt Frewer, Louis Ferreira, and Hannah Lochner.

Is Zack Snyder Planning to Join James Gunn’s DCU?

Netflix

It’s been more than 10 years since Warner Bros. Discovery set out to compete with the MCU with their own shared universe centered on DC Comics characters. The one chosen for the task was Zack Snyder, who directed the franchise’s first two major projects, Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and produced Wonder Woman.

Snyder had a vision to build a universe very different from that of Marvel Studios, but unfortunately he was never able to complete it. Now Gunn will be in charge of rebooting the franchise, with an approach a little different from that of his predecessor. And while the two maintain a cordial relationship, and Snyder confirmed he called Gunn to wish him luck, it seems unlikely that their paths will cross again, at least within DC.

Snyder seems to have no interest in returning to the world of superheroes, although he did show interest in directing an adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns. For now, Batman will return to the big screen with Andy Muschietti directing The Brave and the Bold, and also with Robert Pattinson’s version in Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II. As for Snyder, he seems to be busy enough with his Rebel Moon franchise over at Netflix to worry too much about no longer being part of the DC plan.
