Godzilla and Kong Go Gangster in Gun-Toting AI Fan Art

Summary

  • Trailer footage for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire reveals that Kong now has a bionic arm, making the MonsterVerse even more bizarre, but nothing like fans have come up with.
  • Fan art on social media shows Godzilla and Kong armed with heavy artillery, taking the franchise into a territory it chose not to explore.
  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire promises intense monster-on-monster action, satisfying fans who want a big, fun blockbuster without the finesse of Toho’s recent release.

The MonsterVerse looks set to get even more bizarre in the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with trailer footage showing the latter of the franchise’s lead beasts sporting a bionic arm. All this is a far cry from the recent Toho release, Godzilla Minus One, which kept its Godzilla story grounded in familiar territory of the kaiju smashing up cities in his usual style. But as is usually the way, some pieces of fan art have taken things a little further and asked what if the monster buddies tooled themselves up with some firearms?

As unbelievable as it sounds, two different social media users have been sharing art that depicts Godzilla and Kong as gun-toting mercenaries, taking the MonsterVerse into territory it has thankfully decided not to go. The first of these, shared on Instagram by jblazexx, puts together a collection of AI-generated images of Godzilla with an array of heavy artillery – as if he wasn’t capable of mass-destruction without any additional help. You can check out the images below.

In a completely separate post on Reddit, a series of AI images brought the gun party to Kong’s world, gifting the giant ape handguns and a machine gun for good measure. These images featured Kong in some familiar settings, including the jungles of Skull Island and atop a skyscrape. Check out this collection below.

Godzilla and Kong Return To Screens Later This Year

While Godzilla Minus One made significant waves at the end of 2023, this year will see the MonsterVerse iterations of Godzilla and Kong hit the big screen once again in the sequel to Godzilla Vs Kong. Although everyone expected the monster team-up movie to do well in cinemas in 2021, it exceeded all expectations and guaranteed the future of the franchise for another cinematic outing and the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will see the pair of once enemies joining forces to face a threat that may even be too big for their combined might to handle; Skar King. As seen briefly in the trailer for this year’s round of monster madness, the new antagonist of the franchise is a monstrous beast that towers over his dominion and appears to pose a bigger threat to the Earth than any other titan.

There is still much to be learned about the movie, but one thing that has been promised in abundance is the kind of intense monster-on-monster action that fans crave from the franchise. Director Adam Wingard previously teased huge monster fights that completely remove the human element and just allow the beasts to do what they do. While it may not have the finesse or storytelling abilities of Toho’s most recent offering, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will scratch the itch of many fans who just want a big, fun blockbuster to chew on.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is released on April 12, 2024, while Apple TV + will air the finale of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Friday this week. For those wanting to catch up on Godzilla Minus One, the movie is expected to hit VOD services soon, but for now, doesn’t appear to be getting a streaming home.
