Cillian Murphy won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama at last night’s awards ceremony. This is the second time Murphy has been nominated for the coveted award. His first Golden Globe nod came for his work in the 2005 film, Breakfast on Pluto. On accepting his award, Murphy heaped praise on Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan for his dedication and vision, and having faith in his abilities as an actor. He said:

I knew the first time that I walked on Chris Nolan’s set that it was different. I could tell by the level of rigor, the level of focus, the level of dedication, the complete lack of any seating options for actors that I was in the hands of a visionary director. I want to thank Chris and Emma for having faith in me for 20 years.

Lily Gladstone made history as the first Indigenous woman to take the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama category at the Golden Globe Awards. Taking the stage to receive her awards, the actress started her speech by speaking in Blackfoot. She then thanked her mother for bringing her into contact with the language, saying:

I’m here with my mom, who, even though she’s not Blackfeet, worked tirelessly to get our language into our classroom, so I had a Blackfeet language teacher growing up.

Backstage, Gladstone explained that she made a very easy decision to use Blackfoot to start her speech, as it was just a “natural moment.” As per Deadline, she said:

“It’s often how I introduce myself to a new group of people, especially when it’s significant. One of the first things we’re taught is you say your name, you say where you’re from and you say hello to everyone, all of my friends. It was one of the more natural things I could do in the moment.”

Killers of the Flower Moon is based on the 2017 David Grann novel of the same name, and has been cited by many as Martin Scorsese’s greatest movie. Bringing together an ensemble of the director’s regular collaborators like Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, along with Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow and Lily Gladstone, the epic Western crime drama proved to be a huge critical hit, scoring 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. But its box office was not quite as successful as many hoped.

The mighty budget of $200 million proved to be an insurmountable sum for the film’s theatrical release, with the movie taking in a worldwide gross of just under $160 million. However, like many other movies released recently, Killers of the Flower Moon’s focus was never really on making a billion dollars at the box office.

Originally planned to be an Apple TV+ exclusive, the film hit the big screen thanks to the streamer’s partnership with Paramount, who handled distribution worldwide in theaters. On January 12, 2024, Killers of the Flower Moon will finally arrive on Apple TV+, allowing those who did not want to spend three-and-a-half hours in a cinema to watch the movie in the comfort of their own home. The next big moment for Killers of the Flower Moon will come on January 23, when the Oscar nominations will be announced, and Scorsese’s masterpiece will discover just how big its awards haul could become.
