Critics’ Choice Awards Set Christopher Nolan & Oppenheimer Up For Oscar Glory

The 29th Critics’ Choice Awards were presented last night in Santa Monica, California, and saw both Oppenheimer and director Christopher Nolan walking away with the top prize for Best Picture and Best Director, setting them up for potential Oscar glory. Going into the event, Barbie led the nominations on the big screen with a record-breaking eighteen. Oppenheimer and Poor Things followed with thirteen each. As for the small screen, The Morning Show starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon led the nominations with six, followed by the hit HBO series Succession which received five.

The box office and critical behemoth that is Oppenheimer winning both Best Picture and Best Director continues to suggest that the movie will win big at this year’s Academy Awards, with Nolan expected to finally take home two of the biggest prizes when the event happens in March.

Back to the 29th Critics’ Choice Awards, and despite Oppenheimer lead Cillian Murphy winning several awards for his performance, including a Golden Globe, it was The Holdovers star Paul Giamatti who won Best Actor. A result that has led some to speculate that he could emerge as the surprise winner of Best Actor at the Oscars.

Emma Stone, meanwhile, continued to add to her trophy collection, winning Best Actress for her role as Bella Baxter in Poor Things, with Robert Downey Jr. winning the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer. Giamatti’s The Holdovers co-star Da’Vine Joy Randolph emerged victorious for Best Supporting Actress.

After leading the nominations, Barbie won six Critics’ Choice Awards, including Best Original Screenplay for Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, and Best Song for “I’m Just Ken.”

On the television side of things, Succession continued to dominate, winning Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series for Kieran Culkin, and Best Actress in a Drama Series for Sarah Snook. The hit HBO show has been showered with awards throughout the season, and is expected to win big again at the Emmys.

FX series The Bear, another Emmy favorite, won Best Comedy Series, Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Jeremy Allen White, and Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Ayo Edebiri. The Nextflix series, Beef, walked away with the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Limited Series, with Hulu’s Quiz Lady winning Best Movie Made for Television.
