Jim Harbaugh’s return to the NFL could finally be imminent.
The Los Angeles Chargers have made an “extremely strong offer” to Harbaugh to become their next head coach and are in “striking distance” of securing a deal, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
The Chargers and the Michigan coach – who are reportedly meeting for a second time Tuesday – are at the point in negotiations where they’re discussing potential candidates for general manager and the coaching staff, adds Garafolo.
Harbaugh, who led his alma mater to a national title this season, also had significant interest from the Atlanta Falcons. The 60-year-old previously coached the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-14 and has consistently flirted with a return to the pro level in recent years.
The Chargers are looking for a new coach to pair with franchise quarterback Justin Herbert after firing Brandon Staley.
L.A.’s other coaching candidates reportedly include Mike Vrabel, David Shaw, and Mike Macdonald, among others.
