Milly Alcock, James Gunn & Supergirl Writer Respond to DCU Casting

Summary

  • Milly Alcock has been chosen as the new Supergirl in the DCU’s rebooted franchise.
  • Supergirl will take the lead of the movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
  • This version of Supergirl will have a more hardcore backstory, having witnessed the deaths of those around her on Krypton.

The casting of Milly Alcock as the DCU’s Supergirl has been well received by fans, and a day after the announcement, those closest to the decision have been sharing their feelings on the matter. This included James Gunn, who shared on his Threads account that Alcock was the very first person he pitched to co-CEO Peter Safran. Check out his comments in the post below.

Alcock herself also shared her excitement to be joining the franchise in a post on her Instagram account.

And Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow writer Tom King couldn’t let the moment go without adding his congratulations to plaudits. On his own social media account, King wrote:

“She’s Supergirl and she doesn’t give a #%*# about slings and arrows. Perfect casting. Couldn’t be more excited to see Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the world @bilquis built, brought to life by this incredible actor. Insanity. It started so small…”

The DCU found its new Supergirl on Monday after several months of speculation, which came to a head last week as two front-runners were rumored to be neck-and-neck in the running to take on the coveted role, The House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock will become the latest actress to take on the character in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted franchise (via Deadline).

Having seen her public profile soar as young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series, Alcock was already a firm favorite for the role among fans. However, others in the running, such as Emilia Jones and Supergirl voice actress Meg Donnelly, were also seen as solid choices, and the decision to offer the role to Alcock was probably not an easy on by any means.

Currently, it is not known where Supergirl will make her debut in the new DCU, but with her casting now confirmed, there is certainly a possibility that she could make a small appearance in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. We can probably expect to hear more on that side of things from James Gunn soon, but for now he was on hand to confirm the news via his Threads account.

When Will Supergirl Join the DCU?

DC Comics

What we do know for certain is that Supergirl will get her first solo project of the revamped franchise in the movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which was announced as part of the first wave of projects being headed up by the new team at DC Studios. At the time, Gunn hinted that Supergirl in the DCU will be “much more hardcore” than other versions of the character that have been seen on screen. Gunn noted:

“In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl.”

Meanwhile fans had already been imagining what Alcock could look like in the role of Supergirl, with Instagram user zippexe sharing their interpretation of the casting a week ago. How close will this be to the real thing? Chances are, quite close indeed. You can check out the artwork below.
