Better Call Saul Is Getting a Fat Albert-Style Animated Prequel Called Slippin’ Jimmy

Better Call Saul is getting an animated spinoff series. AMC Networks has revealed the company’s new slate of original digital series heading into development, and the list includes a new season of the Emmy-winning digital series Better Call Saul Employee Training featuring all-new characters from the show. Also on the list is Slippin’ Jimmy, an animated series derived from the world of Better Call Saul set in the lovable conman’s younger years.

Set many years before the events of Better Call Saul, Slippin’ Jimmy follows the adventures of young Jimmy and Chuck McGill and friends back home in Cicero, Illinois. It is created in the “retro style of Fat Albert” and “each episode nods to everything from spaghetti Westerns to Buster Keaton to After Hours.” It’s unclear if Bob Odenkirk and Michael McKean will be lending their voices to the roles, but let’s hope that’s the case.

The Slippin’ Jimmy title is a reference to the nickname Jimmy had been given at the time for staging “slip and fall” accidents to make quick money. On Better Call Saul, Chuck had referred to the nickname and Jimmy’s reputation as a reason why he shouldn’t be allowed to be a lawyer. In season 3, Jimmy also revisited the maneuver by faking a fall in a music store to resolve a financial dispute he was having with the owners.

AMC has also confirmed new episodes of the digital web series Better Call Saul Employee Training are on the way. Each season has included fan favorites from the series reprising their roles for the live-action shorts, which includes Los Pollos Hermanos Employee Training with Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito); Madrigal Electromotive Security Training with Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks); and Ethics Training with Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn). The first season won the web series an Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series.

Rhea Seehorn will also executive produce and co-direct Cooper’s Bar, another original digital series announced by AMC. The show is about the dream of one man (character actor Louis Mustillo) to create the perfect tiki bar experience in the backyard of his L.A. bungalow. Meanwhile, another digital series called Dead in the Water will serve as a Fear the Walking Dead spinoff, following a submarine crew fighting for survival.

Filming is currently underway for the final season of Better Call Saul. A Breaking Bad prequel series, the show details how attorney Jimmy McGill becomes the criminal lawyer we meet in the original series. Created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, the series stars Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn, Jonathan Banks, Giancarlo Esposito, Michael Mando, Patrick Fabian, and Michael McKean. Introduced in later seasons, Tony Dalton has become a fan favorite with fans as well for his performance as the ruthless villain Lalo Salamanca.

Better Call Saul is expected to premiere its sixth and final season in early 2022. It’s likely that the new season of Better Call Saul Employee Training will be released digitally alongside new episodes of the final season. There’s no word yet on when Slippin’ Jimmy will be available to watch. This news comes to us from Deadline.
