Kingsley Ben-Adir, who stars in MCU’s Secret Invasion, recently opened up about the feedback and his perspective on the show’s reception. The series despite its high expectations and A-list cast, has faced its share of criticism.

While promoting his new movie, Bob Marley: One Love, Ben-Adir spoke candidly about the lukewarm response to Secret Invasion. Since its release last May, the series has unfortunately been deemed the least successful in MCU history. However, Ben-Adir remains unfazed by the negative reviews, viewing them as just one part of his broader acting career, per The Direct. Ben-Adir explained:

“The experience of making a movie is why I do my work. Once we wrap, it’s done. It’s over to you guys and over to them. My job is to come in and find a psychological point of view on the character and try to figure out a story. And then after that, it’s really—you take your highs the same way you take your lows.”

In Secret Invasion, Ben-Adir portrays the villainous Gravik, alongside other notable actors such as Samuel L. Jackson, Emilia Clarke, Ben Mendelsohn, and Cobie Smulders. Despite the star-studded lineup and connections to the Captain Marvel franchise, the show received a 53% critical rating and a 47% audience score. Critics pointed to issues with the writing, an over-reliance on CGI, and controversial Skrull reveals as factors contributing to its underwhelming start to Phase Five of the MCU.

Despite the series’ challenges, Ben-Adir found enjoyment in his role as Gravik. He showcased his acting range by portraying a diverse array of characters, from the simple-minded Ken in Barbie to the legendary Bob Marley in One Love. Ben-Adir said:

“Secret Invasion was exploring a character who wanted to see everyone burn and suffer. Ken didn’t really have a brain; he didn’t really have any thoughts of his own. His only purpose in life was to live for [Ryan Gosling’s] Ken. There’s something quite simple about that. And it was very much about Slapstick and physical comedy. Bob [Marley’s] a musical artist, and he’s one of the most loved people on the planet, but I’m not a musician. But they’re all very different.”

Kingsley Ben-Adir on Embracing Different Roles in His Acting Career

One Love promises to be a captivating film, with Ben-Adir starring as Bob Marley during a pivotal time in the singer’s life. The movie also features Lashana Lynch as Marley’s wife, Rita, and Michael Gandolfini in an undisclosed role.

As for Secret Invasion, its future remains uncertain. The series reportedly had a hefty budget of $212 million and faced various creative challenges behind the scenes. Additionally, the absence of post-credit scenes, a staple in MCU projects, further indicates that a second season may not be in the cards. Nonetheless, Ben-Adir’s approach to his work and his ability to embrace different roles demonstrate his resilience and adaptability in the face of the industry’s ups and downs.
