Summary
- Godzilla is pulsating with pink energy to face a new threat, the Skar King, as director Adam Wingard teases an epic showdown.
- The King of the Monsters’ training routine is akin to the Shaw Brothers martial arts films. He must level up!
- Kong and Gojira’s buddy-cop dynamic will be tested as they work together against their dangerous new foe in
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Okay, so Gojira is pretty in pink, but don’t get it confused: He’s not auditioning to be the Pink Power Ranger. He’s powering up. Who would have thought Godzilla had access to a training mode like in a video game? But Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s director, Adam Wingard, teases that the King of the Monster’s magenta-esque energy, which pulsates in the trailers, is the kaiju’s way of powering up to take on the Skar King. Wingard said (via Twitter):
Godzilla is going to have to level up in order to take on this new threat. We get a little preview of what Godzilla has probably done in the past – the way that he can absorb things, and renew himself and bulk himself up.
Wingard added:
This is his version of training routine. I’m really big into Shaw Brothers martial arts. Those films are always about, ‘Here’s a big threat, and you have to do all these things to pump yourself up so that you can take on that threat.’
While the King of the Monsters has sported different looks over the years — a lot of that is due to the rubber suit or CGI associated with the character in each film — it’s never been suggested by his appearance that Godzilla has a “training routine.” Other than the version of Gojira that was overheating from the effects of continued exposure to his internal nuclear energy in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), the kaiju has looked very much the same over the last 70 years.
Teaming Up Against the Skar King
Warner Bros. Pictures
Director Adam Wingard refers to Gojira and King Kong’s buddy-cop relationship as dysfunctional. But the two kaijus must put their differences aside to face off against a dangerous new threat in Godzilla X Kong: the Skar King. And in an interview conducted last December, Wingard detailed finding a foe worthy of Kong and Godzilla’s attention. Wingard told IGN:
“We wanted to come up with an antagonist that would both be a match for Kong and Godzilla, and that’s really hard to do. There’s a lot more to this character and how he’s a threat, and that’s going to be something that’s going to be fun to kind of dole out.”

And after the success of the kaijus teaming up to defeat the Terminator-like Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong, Wingard knew that the two movie monsters needed to headline another big-screen MonsterVerse adventure together. Wingard said in the same interview:
“As soon as the [last] movie came out, and the audiences started to see it, I was like, ‘You just can’t separate these two guys again.’ It’s too exciting having them in one movie. And now, the next one has to be about the continuation of that relationship, which is going to be the team-up.”
