The delightful comedian and filmmaker Mike Birbiglia is the subject of this hybrid comedy-documentary special that takes its name from a Vulture podcast hosted by Jesse David Fox which interviews comedians (Judd Apatow, Bert Kreischer, etc.) about the development of specific jokes and bits. Birbiglia is a great stand-up comic who has transitioned into being an excellent director, beginning with the autobiographical film Sleepwalk with Me, followed by one of the best films about comedians, Don’t Think Twice. That film starred many comics, including Keegan-Michael Key, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher, Chris Gethard, Ben Stiller, Pete Holmes, Adam Pally, Jo Firestone, and Conor Ratliff, along with an excellent Gillian Jacobs.

Mike Birbiglia Tells a Joke
Good One: A Show About Jokes follows Birbiglia after his recent hit Broadway show, The Old Man and the Pool, as he travels the country and creates new material for his stand-up act. The result is an immersive look at the craft of comedy from the ground up and a unique snapshot of the intersection between process and personal.
Birbiglia was famous for his many appearances on the iconic NPR show This American Life and two great stand-up specials, What I Should Have Said Was Nothing and My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend. Since then, he’s had three Netflix specials and directed the two aforementioned films. He’s also become a reliable actor in a variety of shows and indie projects, including Cedar Rapids, Your Sister’s Sister, The Fault in Our Stars, Inside Amy Schumer, Digging for Fire, Billions, A Man Called Otto, Broad City, Orange Is the New Black, and much more. He even starred as one of the many Swifts in Taylor Swift’s music video for Anti-Hero.
