Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac are in negotiations to lead the second season of Netflix’s Emmy Award-winning Beef, according to a new report from Deadline. This would mark a reunion for the two actors, as they previously co-starred in 2011’s critically acclaimed Drive as an estranged couple. The sophomore season of Beef, which has yet to be confirmed, would revolve around two feuding couples; Mulligan and Isaac would play one, while Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) and Charles Melton (May December) would portray the other.

In February, it was reported that Melton, Spaeny, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Anne Hathaway were all being eyed to lead the A24 series’ follow-up season. Had Gyllenhaal and Hathway participated, Beef would have been their third collaboration (following 2005’s Brokeback Mountain and 2010’s Love and Other Drugs). It was also noted that the second season script had been completed and that production was expected to commence later this year.

The first season of the black comedy received 13 Emmy Award nominations, winning eight. Beyond the show’s win for Outstanding Limited Series, Beef racked up individual awards as well. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong each took home lead acting Emmys for their roles. The series also won for Outstanding Directing and Writing, both awarded to creator Lee Sung Jin. The series also earned three Golden Globe Awards, four Critics’ Choice Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards for Yeun and Wong.

Beef follows Danny and Amy (portrayed by Yeun and Wong) , two strangers who let a road rage incident burrow into their minds and slowly consume their every thought and action. Young Mazino, Joseph Lee, Remy Holt, Patti Yasutake, David Choe, Ashley Park, Maria Bello, Justin H. Min, and Andrew Santin round out the cast.

Following Beef’s release, Jin revealed that the series was initially pitched as an anthology – which is the way it seems it will go should Season Two get the greenlight:

“We initially pitched the show as an anthology series where every season is a new beef with new characters… I really love Danny and Amy and George [Joseph Lee] and Paul [Young Mazino] and the world we created. So, I’m really open to it all.”

Star Power Fuels Beef’s Second Season Excitement

Given Beef’s success and the talented names attached to its possible second season, expectations will, undoubtedly, be high.

Mulligan earned a BAFTA Award for 2010’s An Education. The film also earned Mulligan her first Academy Award nod. She earned another nomination for her portrayal of Cassie Thomas in the black comedy Promising Young Woman and most recently for her performance as Felicia Montealegre in the biopic Maestro. Isaac earned a Golden Globe for HBO’s Show Me a Hero and earned praise for his work on other projects, including Scenes from a Marriage and Inside Llewyn Davis. He will star as Victor Frankenstein in Guillermo del Toro’s anticipated Frankenstein.
