Lanterns
will focus on the Silver Age Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, and another of Sector 2814’s power ring-wielding protectors, John Stewart.
“In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape” Green Lantern’s sight, which will soon shine, but not yet on the big screen. The eight-episode live-action DC Universe series, Lanterns, has officially been picked up and will be featured as an HBO Original, rather than appearing on the streaming service Max. Chris Mundy will be running the GL’s small-screen show, and Tom King, as well as Damon Lindelof will serve as executive producers and co-writers on the superhero project. The Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, Casey Bloys, said (per Variety):
“We are elated to be reuniting with both

as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on
DC’s Green Lantern.
As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe,
this first new live action series will mark an exciting new era.”

James Gunn appears to have many Green Lantern characters set up in his DCU plans, which is why it could be a major factor in the series’ future.
Mundy is known for his prolific contributions to Criminal Minds, Ozark, Cold Case and True Detective. Meanwhile, Lindelof is the co-creator of the television series Lost, in addition to his writing and producing credits on Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness, The Leftovers and the HBO Watchmen series.
Lastly, King is a well-known comic book writer whose contributions to Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Mister Miracle and many more, including, of course, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow make him an invaluable member on Lanterns and in the DCU.
Lanterns Is ‘Original Detective Story’ Featuring Hal Jordan & John Stewart
13 years have passed since Ryan Reynolds’ disastrous Green Lantern (2011) debuted in movie theaters. But Earth’s Emerald protectors are receiving a serious upgrade, courtesy of HBO. And as promised in his DCU announcement back in January of 2023, the live-action series will feature two beloved GLs: Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The Chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, reacted to the news of Lanterns officially being picked up as an HBO Original in a joint statement, via the same source:
“We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO
with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm.
John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters,
and Lanterns brings them to life in
an original detective story
that is a
foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.”

Before Nathan Fillion was cast to suit up as Guy Gardner in Superman, Finn Wittrock was slated to portray the GL on an HBO Max series.
Superman (2025) will feature Nathan Fillion portraying Green Lantern Guy Gardner. At the time of this writing, there isn’t any casting information available on Lanterns. The Silver Age Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, first appeared in the pages of Showcase No. 22 in 1959. Guy Gardner followed nearly 10 years later in Green Lantern No. 59 (1968), while John Stewart made his comic book debut in Green Lantern No. 87 (1971/1972).
At the time of this writing, an official release date hasn’t been revealed for
Lanterns.
