The Boys faced a lot of unexpected criticism on the debut of its fourth season, with the show scoring its lowest audience approval rating by some way. However, the Season 4 finale, which included a usual mix of brutal deaths, unexpected twists, and a devastating cliffhanger ending, has gone a long way to redeeming the season. In fact, according to IMDb, the episode is one of the highest rated in the show’s history, setting up high expectations for the fifth and final season.
After alienating some fans with its increased political satire, The Boys Season 4 ended strong by pulling out all the stops and delivering an episode that had a little bit of everything. One of the main things that the episode continued to showcase was the way the series can frequently take a pause in order to elaborate on a certain character’s personal plight. Season 4’s most highly rated episodes tended to center on the story of one particular character, such as Hughie being forced to kill his own father, or Homelander returning to the lab to extract a bloody toll on those inside.

Season 4’s finale clearly resonated more with fans than many of the other episodes from earlier in the season, pulling a 9.3 out of 10 score on IMDb – the third highest of the entire series. The episode was only beaten by Season 3’s fan-favorite “Herogasm” episode, and the Season 2 finale.
The Boys is Still One of Prime Video’s Biggest Hits
Now almost a week after Season 4 came to an end, The Boys continues to dominate the global Prime Video chart, holding the top spot with almost double the viewership of its nearest challenger – the historical My Lady Jane. In addition to this, spin-off series Gen V has also benefited from The Boys’ return, currently sitting in fourth position on the chart.
The increased interest in Gen V has come from the several cameo appearances by characters from the spin-off show, as well as the connecting storyline of the supe-killing virus that was originally introduced as a major storyline of Gen V. With a second season of Gen V already filming, it is clear that there are big things coming for The Boys despite the news that the series will end with Season 5.

Antony Starr has shared a hot take on his favorite childhood superhero, and how his opinion on them has changed over the years.
However, fans of both shows have plenty of time to rewatch older episodes, as Gen V is not expected to debut its second season until later in 2025. As for The Boys, star Karl Urban has recently revealed that the series’ final bloody bow will not hit Prime Video until 2026. What is currently unclear is where showrunner Eric Kripke plans on taking the franchise next. He has made it clear that the ending of the flagship show will not mean the end of the franchise, and other spin-offs will be heading into development soon.
All in all, The Boys is almost certainly going out on a high after its fifth season brings the story to a close with a climactic clash between Butcher and Homelander. By the time that happens, we will probably also have a clearer picture of how the franchise will continue to expand outside its main story.
