First overall pick Caleb Williams flashed his potential during the Chicago Bears’ preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, finishing with four completions on seven attempts for 95 yards.
Though Williams didn’t quarterback any touchdown drives in his first NFL preseason contest, he said he’s happy about his performance.
“I felt good,” Williams said postgame. “There’s always a little bit of more focus that you have going into games for whatever reason … it’s just a sense of control, a sense of progress, a sense of a bunch of different things that, when you get into games, the comfort level and all of that skyrockets.”
Williams showed a little bit of everything in his preseason debut. His arm strength was on full display on a third-down connection to DJ Moore – Williams’ first NFL completion.
Williams later displayed arguably his most special skills: the ability to make off-script throws and create big plays outside the pocket. He flipped a pass to running back D’Andre Swift with the pocket collapsing around him, resulting in a big gain for Chicago.
Williams’ most impressive play of the day was a 26-yard throw to tight end Cole Kmet on the run after rolling to his right.
“I wouldn’t say I was trying to show (my skill set), and I wouldn’t say it’s natural,” Williams added. “I would say that it’s come from the hard work here, and us being here working together (and) building this thing.”
The Bears scored two field goals on their offensive drives with Williams under center. Chicago also played in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game last week but didn’t play any starters.
