Cancelled ‘Crash Bandicoot 5’ was reportedly set to be a ‘Spyro’ crossover

It’s been reported that Crash Bandicoot 5 would have been a crossover with the Spyro The Dragon franchise, before it was cancelled by Activision.

In 2020, Toys For Bob and Activision released Crash Bandicoot 4, the first new instalment in the beloved franchise since 1998. A new report has now revealed that Toys For Bob had started working on a follow-up as well, before it was scrapped by Activision.

In a new video from Did You Know Gaming, gaming historian Liam Robertson claimed that the plot for Crash 5 would have seen Warped antagonist Uka Uka access the world of Spyro and chaos havoc with the Dragon Elders, with Crash needing to travel between universes to save the day. It’s also reported that both Crash and Spyro would have been playable characters, with the pair able to team up.

Another scrapped plan involved playable origin stories for a number of Crash Bandicoot antagonists. Work on Crash Bandicoot 5 only lasted a few months from summer to November 2020, with Toys For Bob working on concept art and early demos of  environments.

According to Did You Know Gaming, the project was cancelled by Activision due to the sales of Crash Bandicoot 4, which was reported to have sold over five million copies. At the same time, Activision was reportedly pulling funding for a number of single-player games to focus on live-service titles with a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater sequel also turned down.

Last month, former Toys For Bob concept artist Nicholas Kole confirmed a sequel to Crash 4 had been in the works. “Some day folks will hear about the Crash Bandicoot 5 that never was and it’s gonna break hearts,” he wrote on social media.

Earlier this year, Toys For Bob broke away from Activision, with the newly-independent studio exploring a “partnership” with Microsoft for their next project.

“Over the years, we’ve inspired love, joy, and laughter for the inner child in all gamers. With the same enthusiasm and passion, we believe that now is the time to take the studio and our future games to the next level. This opportunity allows us to return to our roots of being a small and nimble studio,” they wrote.

In other news, Amazon Games boss Christoph Hartmann has given fans a promising update about the new Tomb Raider game.
