Stranger Things’ David Harbour Says Cast Cried ‘Uncontrollably’ in Finale

Stranger Things Season 5 is nearly complete, and the cast is taking the prospect of the show ending about as good as most would expect. David Harbour, who is set to reprise his role as Jim Hopper, has confirmed that the table read for the final episode was done not too long ago. Unsurprisingly, the emotional hour was meant with intense cries from the cast and crew, some of whom have spent their childhood on Stranger Things.

Harbour went on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via People), revealing details about the upcoming final chapter of Stranger Things. Season 5 is currently in the last stages of production, which has taken a good part of the year to complete. The actor says that the entire cast and crew attended a table read for the final episode of the Netflix series. As one might expect, finding out how Stranger Things ended became an emotional endeavor for a young cast that literally grew up while working on the show. Harbour explains that everyone just started “uncontrollably crying” at some point.

“The end of this episode when we were reading it — just us reading it — about halfway through, people started crying. Then about the last 20 minutes, it was just uncontrollably crying, waves of different people. Noah Schnapp being my favorite.”

It’s unclear why exactly they were crying, and whether it had to do with the death of some of the main characters. However, it’s fair to assume the overwhelming realization that their shared journey would be over soon played a major factor. As Harbour points out, the visceral reaction was partially due to “the fact that these kids, it was their childhood.” Although many of the show’s younger actors are making their presence known elsewhere, Stranger Things finally ending must feel like losing a significant part of their lives.

The Wait for Stranger Things is Nearly Over

Even though it may be regarded as the greatest Netflix show ever released, Stranger Things has had its fair share of criticisms as of late. The mega-budget show, which started as a low-key homage to 80s classics, ballooned to a blockbuster hit that spent years to produce between seasons. That means the wait has been almost unbearable for fans of the show, and highly unusual for the small-screen medium. Although the result was a Season 4 that looked and sounded incredible, seeing the once-child actors in their 20s portray young teenagers kinda got old quickly. Thankfully, it seems the next season won’t take too long to arrive on Netflix.

Stranger Things Season 5 does not have an official release date, but series star Gaten Matarazzo revealed back in September to The Direct that fans would be able to watch the final season in 2025.

“The plan for people seeing it is definitely next year. That’s the goal. There [are] always setbacks. There’s always things that come into play when making a season, especially one that’s huge. So there [are] no guarantees, but I think next year is a safe bet.”

Inspired by 80s pop-culture and elements of Stephen King’s works, Stranger Things is a supernatural action-drama TV series set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. When a young boy goes missing, his group of friends stumbles upon a young girl with telekinetic powers who recently escaped from a mysterious facility. They soon realize that she may be their only chance at stopping an impending doom that threatens to engulf Hawkins whole.
