LeBron, Bronny become 1st father-son duo to play together in NBA

LeBron James and Bronny James made history, becoming the first father-son duo to play together in an NBA game during the Los Angeles Lakers’ 110-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night.

The tandem took the court at the 4:00 mark of the second quarter of the Lakers’ season opener.

Bronny played two-and-a-half minutes with his dad, during which time he missed two shot attempts and collected one rebound.

“Y’all ready? You see the intensity, right? Just play carefree, though,” James told his son before they checked in together. “Don’t worry about mistakes. Just go out and play hard.”

After the victory, James said playing alongside Bronny is “one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever gotten.”

Meanwhile, Bronny reflected on the experience of going to the scorer’s table with his dad, calling it a moment he’ll never forget.

The pair played together in a preseason contest against the Suns earlier in October.

Head coach JJ Redick said pregame that LeBron and Bronny would play together at a time that made sense, according to NBA reporter Mark Medina.

Redick won his first game as Lakers’ coach after being hired by the franchise in June. Anthony Davis led the team in scoring with 36 points and 16 rebounds, helping Los Angeles win its first season opener since 2016.

Before the game, LeBron and Bronny met up with Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr., baseball’s first father-son duo. They played 51 games together for the Seattle Mariners in 1990 and 1991.

Gordie Howe also played with his two sons, Mark and Marty, with the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association, while outfielder Tim Raines and his son, Tim Raines Jr., played together with the Baltimore Orioles.

LeBron, the league’s all-time leading scorer, expressed his desire to play alongside his son when Bronny was still in high school. Bronny, a USC commit, suffered a cardiac arrest caused by a congenital heart defect. He made his debut for the Trojans in December and went on to average 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.

The Lakers selected Bronny with the 55th pick in June’s NBA draft.

LeBron entered his 22nd season in the NBA on Tuesday. Vince Carter is the only other player to reach that milestone.
