Corbet, reading from a speech he had prepared on his phone, thanked the cast and crew members of The Brutalist, as well as his loved ones, before ending his speech with “Tonight, my heart is with Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s family”. Plaza was not in attendance but the dedication sparked a round of applause from the ceremony’s audience.
Baena’s body was reported to have been discovered at his home in Los Angeles by an assistant, where he was later pronounced dead. The director was known for his 2014 horror-comedy Life After Beth, which also starred Plaza, as well as writing the indie drama I Heart Huckabees. Baena and Plaza had been together since 2011, marrying in a private ceremony at their home in 2021.

Starting his career as an actor, Corbet would become celebrated behind the camera with films such as Vox Lux and The Childhood Of A Leader, starring Robert Pattinson. Corbet’s win was one of three for The Brutalist, which also took home the Best Motion Picture -Drama, and Best Actor In A Motion Picture – Drama award for Adrien Brody. It also won the prestigious Silver Lion at last year’s Venice Film Festival.
NME’s James Mottram included it as one of the 20 unmissable films coming out in 2025, describing it as “arthouse heaven”. Other big winners from The Golden Globes included Emilia Pérez, winning four awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture for Zoe Saldaña, while British drama Baby Reindeer took home three awards in the TV categories.
The good-natured ceremony had a moment of tension when Vin Diesel gave an awkward greeting to Dwayne Johnson while presenting an award.
