Netflix’s ‘The Old Guard 2’ Release Date Confirmed as R Rating Revealed

this year. After waiting five years for their return, Charlize Theron and her band of immortal warriors are back, with the follow-up’s latest update no doubt bringing music to the ears of fans everywhere.

After wrapping way back in 2022, action fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of The Old Guard 2. Thankfully, while the movie was missing from Netflix’s official release schedule, it has now been confirmed that the follow-up will land on the streamer later this year on July 2. Not only that, The Old Guard 2 has also now officially been rated R by the MPA, “for sequences of graphic violence, and some language.” All of which promises that, not only will The Old Guard 2 be worth the wait, but the years of setbacks and reshoots are now over for good.

The action thriller follows a former elite soldier who leaps back into action when her son goes missing.

Based on the graphic novel by writer Greg Rucka, The Old Guard was released on Netflix in 2020 and follows a group of mercenaries who happen to be centuries-old immortals with the ability to heal themselves. The first outing centers on the group as they discover that someone has discovered their secret, forcing them to fight to protect their freedom. The first outing proved to be a major hit for Netflix and was met with positive reviews (80% on Rotten Tomatoes), as well as being viewed by 72 million households in its first four weeks, thus making it one of the biggest launches on the streamer.

‘The Old Guard 2’ Will Pick Up Following the First Movie’s Cliffhanger Ending

Directed by Victoria Mahoney, and written once again by Greg Rucka, The Old Guard 2 sees Charlize Theron return as Andy/Andromache of Scythia alongside KiKi Layne as Nile Freeman, Marwan Kenzari as Joe/Yusuf Al-Kaysani, Luca Marinelli as Nicky/Nicolò di Genoa, Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker/Sebastian Le Livre, Vân Veronica Ngô as Quỳnh, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as James Copley. The Old Guard 2 will also add Kill Bill star Uma Thurman and Snake Eyes’ Henry Golding to the franchise in currently undisclosed roles.

Netflix has also since revealed that the action sequel will pick up following the first outing’s cliffhanger ending, which sees a figure from Andy’s (Charlize Theron) past return and seeking retribution. “Andy and her team of immortal warriors return to protect humanity from a formidable new enemy who threatens their existence,” the synopsis from the streamer states. “After Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) betrays the group, he gets exiled for a century — only to find the long-lost Quynh (Veronica Ngô) lurking in his apartment. What does she want?”

Meanwhile, director Victoria Mahoney has teased the “unexpected” in the action thriller follow-up, saying, “My mandate every time we went out the door to scout was; I do not want to visit any locations, routinely seen as an audience member in a number of my favorite films. I relentlessly pushed toward the unexpected.”
