With so many streaming services, there are more great shows running than ever before. Bosch and Bosch: Legacy are among the best of these and have been satisfying that itch for no-nonsense policing for over a decade now, and they do so in a fresh and engaging way that keeps fans glued. The main series ended in 2021, but those who watch the show know that it didn’t really. It just said goodbye to a few characters. Bosch: Legacy carried on the detective’s story with grace and style for another three glorious seasons before finally coming to an end in 2025.

For fans that have followed Bosch from the beginning and for those just now finding out who this man is, here is every season of Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, ranked.

‘Bosch: Legacy’ Season 3

Season 3 of Bosch: Legacy dives headfirst into the murky waters of justice and morality, delivering a narrative that challenges its characters to expertly navigate a labyrinth of ethical dilemmas and unresolved mysteries. Picking up eight months after the shocking events of the previous season, it begins with Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) being under scrutiny as Internal Affairs looks into his possible involvement in the prison death of Kurt Dockweiler, the man who abducted his daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz).

Maddie, now an LAPD officer, struggles with the fallout of her situation while also uncovering some hard-hitting truths about her father. Meanwhile, Honey Chandler (Mimi Rogers) is determined to bring change as District Attorney, but her controversial campaign draws Bosch into her orbit as a private investigator. To make the narrative more intriguing and take things international, the season also introduces a mysterious client from Ireland, who hires Bosch to look into the disappearance of her daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren.

Every Little Choice Carries a Legacy

The third season basically explores the personal and professional legacy of all the characters involved. As Bosch relentlessly pursues justice, Maddie’s growing disillusionment creates a lot of tension and adds emotional depth to the story. The cases are all layered with suspense, from Dockweiler death to Chandler’s political ambitions to Maddie solving a case involving robbers, all set against the backdrop of Los Angeles’ contrasting sunlit avenues and shadowy alleys. The overarching narrative balances character arcs and procedural intrigue with perfection.

The performances this season were brilliant too. Welliver captures his characters’ conflicts; Lintz is equal parts strong and vulnerable as Maddie, while Rogers brings complexity to Chandler’s political storyline. It falls short compared to the intensity of certain seasons from the original Bosch, but it still has action-packed investigations, layered character development, and thematic maturity. Critics have praised the dark and gritty angles, as well as the exciting crossover event that presents Bosch’s retirement life, but some find it slower in pace. Overall, Bosch: Legacy season 3 ends on a satisfying note and is the perfect wrap-up to a beloved spin-off.

‘Bosch: Legacy’ Season 2

Picking up where the first season left off, season 2 of Bosch: Legacy sees Bosch (Titus Welliver) and his old partner Jerry Edgar teaming up to find Maddie after she is kidnapped by Kurt Dockweiler, the rapist in the luchador mask she was investigating in Season 1.

On top of this, Bosch Sr. and Honey Chandler (Mimi Rogers) are being investigated for the murder of Carl Rogers and his lawyer and cover their time spent together by working on the case of a murdered West Hollywood city manager, which leads them to traces of corruption in the police force. The deeper they dig, the more their lives are in danger. Lucky for them, Bosch has never been afraid of danger.

Closer Than Blood

Tensions are higher in the second season of the Bosch sequel, as Bosch and his daughter deal with the aftereffects of her kidnapping after a thrilling payoff in the season’s first two episodes (“The Lady Vanishes” & “Zzyzx”). Each episode only adds to the intrigue as Bosch and his allies take on a new case, with the urgency also escalating with each discovery, culminating in a thrilling season finale.

8

‘Bosch’ Season 7

On New Year’s Eve of 2019, Bosch finds himself on the hunt for the killer of a ten-year-old girl after she is found dead in an arson fire. He’ll stop at nothing to bring the culprit to justice, but as usual, forces there’s always someone in the way, and these people have all the power they need to keep their secrets hidden.

Meanwhile, Detective Jerry Edgar, played by Jamie Hector of The Wire fame, finds himself dealing with the fallout of the death of Jacques Avril, and the mounting pressure to overturn the death of his career leads him to a mental break and puts lives in danger. And while all this is going down, Maddie helps Honey in a high-profile case that will see everyone in danger.

Sins Run Deep

The final season of Bosch left a little to be desired as far as series finales go, but that’s only because it wasn’t the end of the story. However, this season is the finale for some fan-favorite characters, so it is bittersweet in that regard. As Bosch takes on a case that becomes more personal the longer it goes, he finally finds his breaking point in the police force that doesn’t share his righteous moral compass, leading him to finally quit and become a PI, thus setting up the sequel series. Despite this life-changing choice, the final season of Bosch feels like every other season, leaving some longtime fans disappointed.

Ultimately, nothing has changed. Bosch is still a detective cracking cases while his daughter settles into her new role. However, the character of Lieutenant Billets deserves special recognition as the season’s MVP, winning a huge victory over the LAPD’s misogynistic work culture.

‘Bosch’ Season 1

The first season of Bosch shows us where it all began with the investigation of two cases. One is the murder of a 12-year-old boy whose bones were found in the Hollywood Hills. The second is a search for the truth after Bosch is forced to go on trial for shooting a suspect in self-defense. But if solving two cases wasn’t hard enough, now Harry has to deal with a lawsuit from the widow of the man he killed.

Believe it or not, this season gets even crazier when he crosses paths with a serial killer named Raynard Waits. He’s claiming to be the boy’s killer and has a strange interest in the grizzled detective. Having to deal with all of these things at once is stressful for anyone, but his more personal issues, such as his personal life as a single father and the mystery of his past, may be the hardest challenges for Bosch to wrestle with.

From the Top

Love this season or hate it, season 1 effectively raised the bar for what gritty film-noir detective shows should be. While full of familiar tropes of the genre, like the grizzled, rebellious detective, his upstanding partner, and a bureaucratic and disapproving boss, Bosch presents a classic detective’s tale full of family drama and hard case intrigue that’s made both this series and its sequel a mainstay for over a decade now.

Some fans have called this season their least favorite, feeling it to be derivative of the many shows and movies that came before it, but it benefits from a genuinely intriguing story and gives fans a look at the seedy LA underworld in a way not seen before. And to be fair, the first season of any show is hardly ever the favorite because it all rises from here.

6

‘Bosch: Legacy’ Season 1

It’s never a good idea to count a detective out because he always comes back with a vengeance. Harry Bosch is back, but he no longer has the resources that being a detective of the LAPD provided for him. As a Private Investigator, he’ll have to get more creative to get his man. At least now, there’s no red tape in his way. This time, his old rival Honey Chandler is his partner and his employer as she tasks him with investigating a businessman who had tried to have Honey killed. And while the senior Bosch is settling into his new career, his daughter Maddie does the same as a patrol officer on the same beat her father used to run.

A New Beginning

Bosch: Legacy never loses a beat and carries on where its predecessor left off. Some fan-favorite characters make appearances here and there to really pump fans up and also present some new blood to keep things lively. Anyone looking for something altogether different will be disappointed as this series is basically the last but with a fresh start. The highlight of season 1 is the dynamic between Honey and Bosch, which adds a new layer to their relationship as they start to see each other more as allies.

‘Bosch: Legacy’ may be ending, but a new Bosch story is just around the corner.

‘Bosch’ Season 5

If, at this point in the series, you don’t believe that Harry Bosch is the best there is, you clearly haven’t been watching. For those who have, you know you don’t get to be the best without a good deal of controversy. Taking place 15 months after the previous season, Bosch finds one of his past cases coming back to haunt him when a bitter ex accuses him of planting evidence.

Such an accusation could not only cost Bosch his career but also affect his past cases. To fight this accusation, he enlists the help of old foe, Honey Chandler. Later, he must also get to the bottom of an opiate case linked to Russian and Armenian gangsters, putting him in a tight spot he may not be able to get out of. At the same time, his daughter Maddie works as an intern for the DA’s office, while Chief Irving (Lance Reddick) grills Bosch for his lack of communication and eyes the mayor’s seat.

Lies & Ambitions

Bosch season 5 is without a doubt one of the series’ best and introduces one of the show’s best villains, Preston Borders, a man who faces a possible release from prison at the possibility of his case being overturned due to the lawsuit placed against Bosch. He’s one of the series’ best villains and best characters, but so is Maddie, who finds herself gaining development when she gets the opportunity to work alongside her father.

Her growth was pivotal for this season and helped to propel her into the Maddie we have now, and Harry’s depth in looking through his past touches on the show’s expert handling of aging. Speaking of which, Cate and Barrel also see some great development, as well as they also must come to terms with their aging as their usefulness to their department begins to dwindle.

4

‘Bosch’ Season 6

The penultimate season of Bosch brought all the thrills and high-stakes cases that fans have come to expect of the hit series, as well as some pivotal moments and decisions that would alter characters trajectories forever. To start, the normally upstanding Jerry Edgar finds himself at a crossroads when a case hits a little too close to home, leading him to make a fateful decision that could end his career for good.

Maddie continues her work in the LA DA’s office under Honey Chandler but begins to have doubts about her future, and Chief Irving finds himself on the wrong end of a scandal, threatening his mayoral candidacy. And all while this is going on, Harry races to bring down a domestic terrorist group before they can unleash chaos on LA.

Choices & Consequences

Season 6 sees Bosch wandering out of his by-the-book comfort zone as he takes a stranger approach to find justice this time around. The plot this season was also out of the norm as well. A scientist providing radioactive material for a terrorist group isn’t usually the kind of case that the hard-boiled detective normally finds himself in, but it still works well somehow as the show seamlessly blends it in with Bosch’s more mundane aspects. With everything going on with the series’ assortment of characters, the main case sometimes seems to get bogged down by everyone’s side quests.

This can be frustrating, but as always, Bosch sticks the landing and delivers an unpredictable season finally that perfectly launches the characters into the final season.

3

‘Bosch’ Season 2

It doesn’t take long into this season for fans to realize that season 1 walked so this one could run. Approximately six months following the first, Bosch returns from suspension ready to get back to it, and just in time too, as a Hollywood producer Anthony Allen, is found dead, and he appears to have some significant mob connections.

The case soon leads Harry to Las Vegas, where work and personal life start to rub a little too close together. His family soon falls under threat of danger as he digs deeper while simultaneously finding himself in another case involving a ring of dirty cops. However, the past rings a familiar tune as new evidence of the death of his mother sees Bosch looking into her death.

Look to the Past

Bosch season 2 didn’t change much from its first, but it did refine its rougher edges, making for a more engaging narrative. Things get off to a slow start, but fans don’t wait long before things ramp up and culminate in a superb finale that shows fans they were right to stay with the show.

Bosch comes closer to finding the truth about his mother’s death, and we learn more about the stoic detective’s personal life as the series reaches the potential everyone knew it had when it started. We all know where this road goes, and this is just the start of this addictive journey. If two shows aren’t enough, though, there are more spinoffs on the way.

10 Great Police Procedural Shows of the 1950s

Most police procedurals of the ‘5os were precise and realistic. The following are the best of the bunch.

2

‘Bosch’ Season 3

Set 16 months after the season 2 finale, Bosch continues the hunt for his mother’s killer while also juggling fatherhood when his daughter Maddie moves into his home in LA. Just as he thought he was getting closer to the truth, Harry becomes a suspect in the murder of Ed Gunn, a man fitting the MO of his mother’s killer.

On the case is veteran detective Jimmy Robertson, a man who can give Bosch a run for his money in terms of determination and skill. At the same time, Bosch also keeps a weather eye on the trial of a high-profile movie mogul who assigns a young police detective to help get him off, and it doesn’t take long for him to prove himself a worthy adversary.

Count Your Wins

In its first two seasons, while still trying to find proper footing, Bosch primarily relied on its title character to carry the story forward. It worked, but season 3 finds new life as the show starts to put more attention on its supporting characters, making them just as necessary to the show as Harry himself. J. Edgar, in particular, is given more screen time in the same way that Irving and Grace received in the previous season, allowing the plot room to more easily move forward without the titular detective’s involvement.

There’s also a great abundance of villains as well, including a twisted killer that keeps Bosch on his toes. It goes to show that with Bosch handling multiple cases each season, fans need to stay focused or risk getting lost in the fast-moving storylines.

1

‘Bosch’ Season 4

Taking just three months after the season 3 finale, Bosch is assigned by Irving to head a task force to investigate the murder of Howard Elias. Howard was a Civil rights attorney who was defending a black man accusing the LAPD of police brutality, but Elias was soon found dead. He had a history of defending clients who sued the LAPD, so once news of his murder got out, the city soon fell under racial strife.

It’s up to Bosch to find the killer before things reach a boiling point, but it doesn’t help that Irving has also assigned Internal Affairs to keep an eye on Bosch’s team. Also, Bosch’s ex-wife goes after a gang of Chinese nationals, one of which is under federal investigation. And Bosch’s investigation into his mother’s killer continues after the detective who was originally assigned to the case is killed.

A City on the Brink

Bosch season 4 is number one on this list, as it represents the series at its best. Harry is forced to face the corruption of the LAPD after an assassination leaves the city in turmoil, taking the series into the dark side of the police. Fortunately, this season isn’t all doom and gloom, as we get great development between Maddie and Bosch. The series has always been carried by the balancing of police work and the interpersonal relationships between its characters, but it’s never been done so perfectly as in this season.

The finale may also be the most explosive in the entire series, as well as the best overall. But that’s up to the fans to decide. Bosch and Bosch: Legacy are available to watch for free (with ads) on Freevee.
