Dua Lipa was joined by Nile Rodgers for a special version of Chic’s ‘Le Freak’ at Madison Square Garden this weekend – watch below.
The singer has been making a habit of covering a local song at every show on her current ‘Radical Optimism’ World Tour, the North American leg of which kicked off at the start of this month.
On Saturday (September 20), she played the third of four shows at the legendary New York City venue and to mark the occasion, she brought out Rodgers for a rendition of his classic 1978 single, which was synonymous with the city’s Studio 54 nightclub during the heydays of disco.
Introducing the segment of the show in which the night’s unique cover version takes place, she said, “Here in New York, I’m actually spoiled with the choice”. Her previous MSG shows had seen her play Blondie’s ‘One Way Or Another’ and Alicia Keys’ ‘No One’.

Previous high-profile guests to join Lipa for versions of their own songs on this tour have included Chaka Khan for ‘Ain’t Nobody’ in Chicago, Jamiroquai for ‘Virtual Insanity’ in London, Neil Finn for ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ in Auckland and Kevin Parker for ‘The Less I Know The Better’ in Sydney.
Her two Wembley shows in June later became the subject of a mini-documentary titled Dua Lipa – The Beat Before (Wembley Stadium), which chronicled behind-the-scenes footage and fan vox-pops from the gigs.
In other Dua Lipa-related news, she officially confirmed her engagement to actor Callum Turner in June after months of fan speculation.
Speaking to British Vogue for a new cover story, she said: “Yeah, we’re engaged. It’s very exciting. This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don’t know, be best friends forever—it’s a really special feeling.”
She was also granted Kosovan citizenship in August, being hailed by the country’s president as “one of the most iconic cultural figures in our country’s history”.
Lipa was also one of the celebrities to hit out at British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s response to their open letter that called for the end of “UK complicity” in Gaza.
“Prime Minister, you’ve built your career as a human rights lawyer, defending the powerless and challenging injustice,” the response read. “In years to come, when you are asked whether you have done enough, what will you say?”
