The Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Trio Revealed in First Look at The CW Reboot

Our first look at the live-action incarnation of The Powerpuff Girls has been revealed in new photos and video footage taken from the set. Currently in development at The CW, the series follows older versions of the superhero children and stars Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup. The images and footage from the set show the three in costume, each wearing outfits similar to what they wore as cartoon children.

The Powerpuff Girls live-action series follows Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as disillusioned twentysomethings who’ve become resentful at losing their childhood to fighting crime, but when the world needs them more than ever, the three are faced with reuniting as the famous Powerpuff Girls once again.

Along with Bennet, Cameron, and Perrault, Scrubs star Donald Faison has also been cast as Professor Utonium, the girls’ father and creator. Nicholas Podany will also star as Joseph “Jojo” Mondel Jr., the son of the villain Mojo Jojo from the original cartoon series. There’s no telling which other characters from the first show will also be appearing in the live-action adaptation.

Created by Craig McCracken and produced by Hanna-Barbera, The Powerpuff Girls was originally developed for Cartoon Network. Set in the city of Townsville, the colorful action series followed three kindergarten-aged girls with superpowers protecting the world from dastardly criminals and supervillains. The cartoon series originally aired for six seasons between 1998 and 2005, though it has continued to be a cult favorite in the years since.

McCracken will have no direct involvement in the live-action reboot, as he does not actually own the rights to the characters and wasn’t invited to be a part of the production. He did wish the production well when speaking about the reboot in an interview with Syfy back in January, admitting that he’s curious to see how the new version of the story plays out for The CW.

“I kind of found out that they were considering doing that like a year ago, and that’s all I know about it. Yeah, I’m not part of that production in any way,” McCracken explained. “It’s one of these things where I don’t own those characters [they] are owned by…well, I don’t even know who owns it now because of the Warner Bros. / AT&T merger. It’s one of those companies that owns the rights, so they can do what they want with it.”

The Powerpuff Girls creator added: “”I’m curious to see what they do with it. The initial concept of Powerpuff Girls was the idea that they were little kids being superheroes, so the fact that they’re making them grow up, that sort of changes that initial concept. But we’ll see what they do with it.”

It’s not yet clear when we’ll see the new Powerpuff Girls live-action adaptation make its way to The CW. This news comes to us from TMZ.
