The Flash Loses Original Cast Members Tom Cavanagh and Carlos Valdes

Ahead of its eighth season on The CW, The Flash has lost two more original cast members who’d been with the superhero series since season 1. Tom Cavanagh and Carlos Valdes, who respectively played Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash and Cisco Ramon, are officially out after seven seasons. The news was announced on Tuesday by The Flash executive producer/showrunner Eric Wallace.

“Tom and Carlos have been an integral part of our show for seven seasons, and will be greatly missed,” Wallace told Deadline. “Both are incredible talents who created beloved characters that fans and audiences around the world have come to love. Which is why we are happily keeping the door open for return appearances.”

Reportedly, Cavanagh was originally intended to end his run as a series regular at the end of season 6. In February 2020, he teased the end of his time on The Flash in a post on Instagram. Posting an image of himself, the caption read: “At times brusque, sunny, capricious, and perpetually shameless, they will always be linked by a single unbreakable thread of gratitude. My thanks to everyone on all sides of the screen that makes up this wee superhero show of ours.”

On the show, Cavanagh played Harrison Wells (aka Eobard Thawne, aka Reverse-Flash). Because of the pandemic, The Flash had its sixth season short. This resulted in Cavanagh returning for the start of season 7, with the actor quietly ending his series regular run on the show in the third episode. It’s possible he’ll be featured in one of the remaining season 7 episodes, but he’s officially wrapped on the show as of the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Valdes is known to fans for his role as Cisco Ramon (aka Vibe), and he also played Ramon’s doppelgangers Reverb and Echo. Like Cavanagh, Valdes had also been featured in a series regular role since the first season. The Ramon actor will officially end his run on the show with an appearance in the season 7 finale, and it’s unclear why he’s leaving the series. While Gustin is already on board for season 8, the other remaining original series regulars are currently negotiating new deals to return.

A part of the Arrowverse, The Flash follows Barry Allen, a crime scene investigator who gains super-human speed and fights crime as the titular superhero. Developed for The CW by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, and Geoff Johns, the series first aired in 2014, becoming a quick hit with viewers. The critical reception has also been rather strong consistently in the years since. Now in the midst of its seventh season, the series was renewed for season 8 by the network in February.

New episodes of The Flash air Tuesdays on The CW. For the DC fans wanting to see more of the character, the DCEU incarnation of The Flash is currently filming with Ezra Miller as the speedy superhero. Because it will feature a multiverse storyline, there’s no telling who just might show up, leading some to believe Grant Gustin might show up for a cameo. That movie is scheduled to be released on Nov. 4, 2022. This news comes to us from Deadline.
