Director John Krasinski revealed in 2021 that A Quiet Place was meant to be a trilogy that would wrap up the Abbott family’s part in the overarching story, and after six years, their arc will finally be completed. A Quiet Place Part III is shaping up to be bigger than the previous installments based on one actor’s casting, which effectively ties all of the installments’ narratives into a common thread — his part also directly impacts Cillian Murphy’s role.
Jack O’Connell officially joined the ensemble of A Quiet Place Part III last March, riding a wave of high-profile horror features helmed by acclaimed visionaries Ryan Coogler (Sinners) and Danny Boyle (28 Years Later), and emerging auteur Nia DaCosta (28 Years Later: The Bone Temple). While details about his role in the silent apocalypse were initially kept strictly under wraps, May set photos finally offered a major clue, revealing O’Connell donning a National Guard uniform.
It turns out he is far more than a mere foot soldier in humanity’s mounting defense against the alien invasion. Speaking with Collider, O’Connell confirmed that his as-yet unnamed character and Emmett (Murphy) are brothers. Reflecting on the sequel’s surprisingly intimate production, O’Connell teased how his dynamic with Murphy grounds the sci-fi spectacle:
“A Quiet Place was, that felt like family. It’s about family, obviously. Got John Krasinski and Emily Blunt involved, and Cillian and I play brothers. There was a real familial feel to that one. It was cool, man. But horror’s popping off. People are turning out for horror. So it’s great. Yeah, it’s amazing.”
That reveal addresses one of the franchise’s biggest theories about Emmett’s mysterious past. He was first introduced as an isolated, hardened survivor in A Quiet Place Part II, grieving the tragic loss of his wife and children. Knowing that his brother has survived the aftermath forces him to face the trauma and re-evaluate everything he thought he lost. This tracks with set photos of O’Connell and Murphy sprinting side-by-side across a militarized Manhattan — it’s either a flashback scene of the initial invasion, or a scene of the brothers reunited in the present timeline.
It’s still unclear whether Emmett’s and his brother’s story will end with the Abbotts’ arc in Part III, or if the franchise leaves these open to explore in a spinoff. A Quiet Place: Day One proved the saga could expand by focusing on other characters, such as Samira (Lupita Nyong’o), who experienced the aliens’ arrival at ground zero. Alex Wolff, who played a nurse at Samira’s hospice, is also set to reprise his role in Part III, presumably in a flashback scene that ties the sequel to Day One, just like Henri’s (Djimon Honsou) brief appearance in the prequel linked to A Quiet Place Part II.
