⚽Game of the Day

La Salle 3, East Greenwich 0

What happens when one of the state’s premier attacking players shifts from a traditional center forward’s role to the right wing?

La Salle showed a bit of a wrinkle in the second half Tuesday night, and Mila Falcone was dangerous. She added a pair of assists to a goal in the 15th minute as the Rams took out East Greenwich, 3-0, in Division I.

Reese Ridolf and Campbell Cordeiro both hit the net off passes from Falcone, a returning All-State player and New Hampshire commit. La Salle padded its 1-0 lead in the 41st and 72nd minutes, remaining unbeaten under the lights at Cimini Stadium.

“I like just being able to turn, and then I have so much space to drive,” Falcone said. “I’m fast. I can get down the line.”

Falcone’s diagonal ball from near midfield skipped along the turf and hit Ridolf in stride just out of halftime, setting up a right-footed shot into the far corner to make it 2-0. The Rams put the match to bed inside the final 10 minutes when Falcone powered down the right and Cordeiro kissed one off the left post and in to make it a three-goal cushion.

“Press together as a team,” Falcone said. “We went out doing that. We were strong.”

Falcone’s opener put La Salle in front to stay, and Grace Keenan made a couple late saves to preserve her shutout. She tipped one shot onto the crossbar and denied a rebound effort from Isabel MacMillan, as the Avengers (3-2-0) fell for just the second time. The Rams (5-0-2) have managed to avoid a first loss while defending their state title and have a showdown looming with Cumberland next Friday night.

“We came back from last year wanting to win it even more,” Falcone said. “Just putting in the effort and not taking any game for granted.”

⚽GIRLS SOCCER – Division I

Paynter Maher, Cumberland Girls Soccer

Cumberland 4, Moses Brown 1

It took the Clippers a bit to figure out how to get a shot past All-Stater Marielle Nassiff, but the offensive pressure picked up and Paynter Maher showed off her finishing skills in a 4-1 win.

Cumberland pushed from the start but Nassiff was more than ready for it, turning away every chance blasted her way. With 24 minutes left in the half, Mackenzie Ferrer got the Clippers on the board, but four minutes later, Cole Walker scored the equalizer.

The game looked like it was headed to the halftime tied at 1, but with 2:59 left, Maher got the go-ahead goal Cumberland needed. The Clippers’ midfield took control in the second half but Nassiff continued to be a thorn in their side. Maher finally broke through against with a goal with 13:50 left and 3:50 later, added the final tally of the game.

The win came three days after the Clippers (7-1 Division I) suffered their first loss of the season, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of North Kingstsown. Cumberland will be back in action Saturday when it hosts Cranston West.

Moses Brown drops to 1-3 in Division I and will try to grab a win on Thursday when it travels to play Lincoln.

Nencka scored just three minutes into the contest and then knotted the game with six minutes left in regulation. Comella started the Chargers off right midway through the second half, after Olivia Riley’s throw-in set up the scoring opportunity. Brucker scored three minutes later for a 2-1 advantage after receiving a pass from Claire Short.

Savana Debont Fitzgerald made four saves for Chariho and Moira Ware had six stops for the Huskies.

Chariho travels to Moses Brown next Monday and Mt. Hope heads to Bishop Feehan on Thursday.

The Lions’ Riley Bouthillette opened the scoring 14 minutes into the first half with a penalty kick and added her second goal a minute later after a setup from Isabella Martinelli. DanikaDenham also found the net early, lifting Lincoln to a quick 3-0 advantage.

Grace Araujo extended the lead to 4-0 late in the first half on an assist from Katherine Goolgasian. Lincoln capped the scoring with two minutes remaining when Abigail Kapadia converted a throw-in from Martinelli.
