One does not need to be on a New York stage to emote Broadway energy, Alan Cumming just showed us. The legend of an actor had given us a delightful chaos of a video seemingly captured in the corridor of a castle somewhere amid the Scottish highlands-a corridor dramatic enough with lighting, and, of course, the iconic fedora. The caption simply read, “Guess what time it is? Yes, it’s Saturday Night On Broadway!” but the content, really, wasn’t.

Cumming commences a fast-paced, desperate, and frustrated repetition of “Howdy Cohen!” while casting some dramatic eruptions toward different rooms of the castle. Then, with flair that few seasoned Broadway players could muster, he shouts, “There’s the bedroom!” Stitching the absurdity of this chaos into one imagery is something akin to a sloppy drunk Shakespearean actor who, after the last call, lost his way to a film noir set.
A watershed hour for comment culture arose to applaud Cumming for this wild performance; a comment read, “literally the best enter stage ever,” while another was encouraged by the fedora, “That fedora is everything!” That Scottish charm really got the better part of everyone, a fan wondered, “What is it about Scottish lads??” after describing their weekend in the company of Cumming and another Scottish creator.
Numerous comments went on to reference the performer and Cumming’s frequent partner, LaLa Ri, with one fan asking, “But where is LaLa? The Queen!!!” which led to some speculation about future collaborations between the two. One comment then humorously suggested that Cumming was “dressed for some sort of mystery this Saturday nite!” in reference to his black garb and enigmatic performance.
It just goes to show why Cumming will be remembered as one of the most unpredictable and thoroughly entertaining individuals of all time. Whether he’s in a Broadway show, a blockbuster movie, or goofing around in a castle in Scotland, Cumming goes all out for energy. For him to turn any given space into a performance place speaks volumes about his creativity, as well as the desire to entertain his fans wherever he goes.
This post is even more personal because it is such an unusual mix of Cumming’s high theater training interspersed with just silly actions. All the over-the-top motions, dramatic lighting, repetition of phrases- it’s all technically very precise- yet utterly absurd. This is the stuff that reminds us why we give our hearts to performers in the first place.

One thing that made itself clear as the comments flowed into the night: people aren’t going to get enough of Alan Cumming being Alan Cumming. Whether he’s referencing his Broadway movement, or merely playing with camera angles in an ancient cunning castle, he definitely knows how to give his audience what they want: the shocks, combined with genius. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that wherever Cumming shoots next, the Saturday Night on Broadway series follows suit!
