All 12 Seasons of ‘Murder, She Wrote’ Are Available on Tubi

Tubi is one of the best streaming services, and not just because it’s free. Alright, maybe a huge upside is that it’s free, but the streamer updates its catalog monthly and it just keeps getting better. Imagine having all of your favorite classic productions in one place and not having to spend any money to stream the episodes back-to-back. It’s like having your cake and eating it too! One of the shows on the streamer that has a following of generations of dedicated fans is Murder, She Wrote. The iconic murder mystery has 12 seasons of pure fictional murder-solving goodness, and it’s available to stream now on Tubi.

Starring Angela Lansbury, Murder, She Wrote is set in the fictional, small town of Cabot Cove, which seems to have murders everywhere mystery author Jessica Fletcher appears. Fletcher is a highly praised author with best-selling novels who uses her crime-solving abilities to capture suspects who would have gotten away with it if she weren’t in town. Jessica is a witty woman with an eye for details that Cabot Cove’s sheriff always seems to miss. From murders happening on a plane, a bus, and more, viewers could count on Jessica Fletcher to find the missing pieces of the puzzle and get justice for the victims’ families in the hour-long production.

Talk about the perfect casting choice.

The classic show focuses primarily on Jessica Fletcher (Lansbury), which is why she’s the only character on the series to appear in all of its episodes and made-for-TV movies. Like many ’80s productions, the series saw various guest stars make appearances as the town’s visitor, a friend of Jessica’s, a victim, a suspect, etc. Gene Barry, Martin Milner, Earl Holliman, Pat Morita, Tom Wopat, John Astin, Loretta Swit, Vicki Lawrence, and many more appeared on the show. It premiered on September 30, 1984, and quickly became a must-watch television show as millions tuned in every week to see what murder Fletcher was on a mission to solve.

One of the reasons why Murder, She Wrote was so groundbreaking is that the main character, a woman over 40, didn’t act “old and out-of-style.” Lansbury was determined to keep Jessica Fletcher as a positive representation for women in Hollywood. Especially those Hollywood studios no longer considered “starring role” material because of their age. She also had a say in what Jessica Fletcher wore, which is why viewers saw the character in everything from jogging attire to dresses, pantsuits, and more. During an interview with the Tarrytown Daily News in 1985, Lansbury revealed that she was ecstatic about the show’s success, but it was not something she had expected. “I thought, well, it’ll run a season… If we survive well this season, and we keep our audience, and I think the chances are very good, we’ll undoubtedly be asked to do a third season.”

‘Murder She Wrote’ Proved That Angela Lansbury Was Always a Star

Universal Television

Many of Angela Lansbury’s earliest roles, especially during her time with MGM, consisted of her playing the “other girl” or the woman who was jealous of her friend’s relationship and life. In the interview, she talked about how she experienced the highs and lows of Hollywood. Her Broadway and film career led up to Murder, She Wrote’s success, but the series is what proved her talent was far from just playing the other woman. “You have to go through this really shocking experience of highs and lows, and I think anybody with their heads screwed on right really doesn’t expose themselves to that kind of horror.”
