Amanda Seyfried Stars In New ‘Long Bright River’ Trailer

Amanda Seyfried is taking it to the streets. The Mamma Mia and The Dropout actress has pivoted to fighting crime in her latest project, the Peacock crime thriller Long Bright River. The adaptation of the popular Liz Moore novel of the same name is set to hit the streaming service on March 13, 2025, and in preparation, Peacock has released a new trailer rife with some of television’s favorite tropes: cops, sex workers, and addiction.

According to the official synopsis from Peacock, “Long Bright River tells the story of Mickey (Seyfried), a police officer who patrols a Philadelphia neighborhood hard-hit by the opioid crisis. When a series of murders begins in the neighborhood, Mickey realizes that her personal history might be related to the case.”

What’s ‘Long Bright River,’ The Novel, About? And How Might The TV Show Differ?

Because original ideas are so scarce in Hollywood these days, it should probably come as little-to-no-surprise that Peacock’s Long Bright River is based on a preexisting intellectual property (IP for short) — Liz Moore’s novel of the same name. Moore is a prolific and acclaimed novelist, whose other books include the popular The Words of Every Song, Heft, The Unseen World, and her most recent, The God of the Woods, which was released in 2024. The last two of those books have also been optioned (by Sony Pictures Television) to be adapted into film and/or television projects, with Moore attached in a writing capacity.

But what about the synopsis for the novel version of Long Bright River? Well, that gives away a lot more of the plot than the trailer, which keeps the relationships at play a bit more shrouded in mystery. For those who are curious on that front, you can check out the official novel synopsis below:

“In a Philadelphia neighborhood rocked by the opioid crisis, two once-inseparable sisters find themselves at odds. One, Kacey, lives on the streets in the vise of addiction. The other, Mickey, walks those same blocks on her police beat. They don’t speak anymore, but Mickey never stops worrying about her sibling. Then Kacey disappears, suddenly, at the same time that a mysterious string of murders begins in Mickey’s district, and Mickey becomes dangerously obsessed with finding the culprit—and her sister—before it’s too late. Alternating its present-day mystery with the story of the sisters’ childhood and adolescence, ‘Long Bright River’ is at once heart-pounding and heart-wrenching: a gripping suspense novel that is also a moving story of sisters, addiction, and the formidable ties that persist between place, family, and fate.”

So, there you have it: Kacey and Mickey are sisters! Although how they’re connected to the potential killer remains a mystery. Could it be their father? A long-lost brother? Someone else entirely? Fans of the novel know the answer, but those of us without that insider knowledge will have to continue to guess. Besides, there’s always a chance those aspects of the story have changed in its evolution towards becoming a TV show. So maybe none of us really know the answer!
