Despite being around for over 70 years, the Godzilla franchise remains strong. The highly anticipated Godzilla Minus Zero is set for release on Nov. 6, 2026, and early word of mouth has praised it as one of the year’s best films. Four months later, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures will release the next entry in their successful MonsterVerse franchise, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, on Mar. 26, 2027.
The MonsterVerse is going strong on television, with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters expanding the franchise’s mythology. The sci-fi series debuted on Apple TV in 2023 and is set between Godzilla and its sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. While Season 1 largely focused on Godzilla, Season 2 introduced other MonsterVerse titans, including Kong and the original creation, Titan X. Now, six months after Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 concluded on May 1, 2026, a new report on the show’s future has surfaced.
Deadline reports that Apple TV is in discussions with Legendary about a Season 3 for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. However, a new season would also bring a creative overhaul for the series. While it is described as a reboot, it appears Apple TV is looking for more of a reset within the same MonsterVerse continuity, one focused on a new Titan from Legendary’s MonsterVerse.
A search is underway for new writers and a showrunner who will take over from the previous season’s creative team, which included showrunner and executive producer Chris Black and co-creator and Season 1 executive producer Matt Fraction. No word yet on whether the characters from the first two seasons will carry over into Season 3. The cast includes Emmy winner Anna Sawai (Shogun), Kurt Russell (Escape from New York), Mari Yamamoto (Rental Family), Kiersey Clemmons (The Flash), Anders Holm (Workaholics), Joe Tippitt (Mare of Easttown), and Amber Midthunder (Carrie).
Monarch Season 2 ended with the reveal of Rodan. The titan previously appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which, in the MonsterVerse timeline, is two years after his Monarch appearance. The series seemed to set up a Rodan-centric story for Season 3, though it is unclear whether that is still the intent. Since Rodan debuted in his own film in 1956 before joining the larger Godzilla franchise, he could theoretically be the new central titan for Monarch Season 3.
The revamp could be driven by the licensing deal between Legendary and Toho. Legendary licenses each individual character from the Godzilla franchise for each film and television series, while Toho retains rights and creative control. Legendary and Apple could shift the focus to an original titan created specifically for the MonsterVerse, one they fully control creatively.
The Monarch reboot is interesting, especially since Apple TV is developing a spin-off series centered on Wyatt Russell’s character, Lee Shaw. Russell played Shaw in the first two seasons of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, during the shows’ 1950s-to-60s set story, while actor Kurt Russell (Wyatt’s real-life father) plays the role in the contemporary storyline. J.D. Dillard (Devotion) has been hired to helm the pilot for the spin-off, with the cast including Millie Brady (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones), Corey Stoll (Ant-Man), Ralph Ineson (Fantastic Four: First Steps), Nyasha Hatendi (Alex Rider), Connie Nielsen (Wonder Woman), and Stana Katic (Castle). Apple TV has not officially picked up the series.
