Arcane Takes Home Emmy for Best Animated Program

Arcane is now the first streaming show to win the award after previous failed attempts from Netflix.

It’s another victory for the team behind Netflix’s Arcane, and this time new ground has been broken. The critically acclaimed Netflix series has scored the Emmy for Best Animated Program at the Creative Arts Ceremony. This is the first time a streaming series has walked away with the award.

This is an award that Netflix has tried for in previous Emmy ceremonies, with Big Mouth and BoJack Horseman among the previously nominated titles. But Arcane was able to beat out the competition and finally snag the streaming service the award, beating out fellow nominees Rick and Morty, Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, and Marvel’s What If…?. Series co-creator, Christian Linke, accepted the award.

It’s been amazing to see the world embrace our characters and our stories so thanks to Netflix who believed in us from the beginning, thanks to Riot Games, who worked on the whole IP… and to all the people that have been with our game and League of Legends for the last 12 years or so who helped make it as big as it is now.”

Arcane is based on the League of Legends franchise. Released in November 2021, the series tells the origins of Jinx (Ella Purnell) and Vi (Hailee Steinfeld), who are sisters on opposing ends of a political event in the making. We witness the chaos unfold in the world of Arcane through their eyes as attacks and events boil over. Through breathtaking animation by Fortiche Productions, the series was a breakout success among established fans of the game along with newcomers that had never played before.

Arcane Continues To Break Down Walls

A major factor that was praised for Arcane was the writing. While the primary narrative was on the sisters Vi and Jinx, audiences also learned of the backstories behind characters such as the crime lord Silco (Jason Spisak) and the members of the Piltover Council. Co-Creator Alex Yee spoke with Deadline about the joys of using the show as an opportunity to explore different environmental and story elements of the game that otherwise would have been left untouched in the game.

We both worked at the company for quite a while prior to embarking on this journey. For me, I spent a lot of time working on the world building of the different champions that were added to the game. There are always so many stories that we dreamed of being able to tell for such a long time, but due to the nature of the game it always felt like there was so much left to be explored. A lot of this show was finally getting the opportunity to take them off of the game stage and into their personal lives and see what made them tick. We knew what made them champions or what made them heroes, and this was finally our opportunity to see what would make them human.

Upon its release, Arcane became Netflix’s highest-rated series within a week of its premiere. Riot Games and Netflix announced a second season to Arcane shortly after, promising more of what audiences love. No news has been released yet if the second season will start where the first season left off, or will be an all new story with any of the other League of Legends champions.
