Brewers beat Mariners 22-0, tie record for largest shutout since 1888

The Milwaukee Brewers put themselves in the record books with a shocking 22-0 beatdown of the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday at American Family Field.

The win is tied for the largest margin of victory in a shutout since 1888, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com. The Brewers are the third team to post a 22-0 win in that span, joining the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1975 and the Cleveland Indians in 2004. It’s also the largest home shutout in the majors since the New York Giants beat the Buffalo Bisons 24-0 at the Polo Grounds on May 27, 1885, per Langs.

The 22 runs tied Milwaukee’s single-game record from Aug. 28, 1992, in Toronto.

Every Brewers hitter – both starters and substitutes – reached base at least once and scored at least one run; Brice Turang was their only player without a hit. Garrett Mitchell went 4-for-6, while David Hamilton and Luis Lara each tallied three hits. Hamilton had a homer, while Lara connected for his first big-league blast in the eighth. Christian Yelich and Jake Bauers also went deep.

Milwaukee led 1-0 through the first four-and-a-half innings before its bats exploded to score five runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth. The shutout win entered record territory when Mariners position player Leo Rivas allowed nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits in the bottom of the eighth.

The Brewers scored their 20th and 21st runs when Mariners star Julio Rodríguez forgot how many outs there were and threw the ball into the stands after catching a flyout.

It was a rough night for Seattle from the start. The Brewers opened the scoring with what turned out to be the winning run in the first when Bauers knocked the ball out of Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh’s glove and then turned around to sneak in for the run after having momentarily not realized Raleigh dropped it.

The Mariners managed just five hits against four Brewers pitchers and committed four errors, two of which were charged to Raleigh. Starter Bryce Miller was charged with six runs (five earned) on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings. He was relieved by Josh Simpson, who surrendered five runs, all earned, in just two-thirds of an inning.

Brewers catcher Gary Sánchez worked around two hits to pitch a clean ninth inning and seal the historic victory.
