Bryan Cranston Reprises Breaking Bad Role for New Mexico Advert

Despite professing to be “done” with Breaking Bad character Walter White on several occasions, Bryan Cranston has reprised his role as the meth-cooking teacher in the most unlikely of places – a New Mexico anti-littering campaign advert. Yes, the character that became a crime kingpin and was responsible for the murders of several people on and around the Mexican border is now telling the state of New Mexico how to clean up after themselves.

The new “Breaking Bad Habits” campaign sees Cranston getting back into character once again as White, to glower his way though a serious message for those watching to “Keep litter out of my territory.” While it would be easy to believe that these shorts have been done on a whim, and are just a half-hearted attempt to tap into a familiar property, there is a catch. The ad was created and directed by Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, which means that they are littered – no pun intended – with references to the show, and will probably be one of the few times we will see Cranston reprising his iconic role again.

“Hopefully, folks who see this commercial will take Walt’s hint and think twice before they toss their trash across our beautiful state,” Gilligan commented in a statement. “Otherwise, Heisenberg just might come after them!”

Cranston added, “Most public service campaigns work using common sense and empathy… that’s not what we did here! Walter White represents a certain threat in the message… but all in good fun.”

Bryan Cranston is Done With Walter White…At Least in a Serious Sense

Breaking Bad is regarded as one of the greatest TV shows of all time, and that is partly down to the stunning performance by Cranston in the lead role of Walter White. Although he has reprised his role in prequel series Better Call Saul, and several commercials, Cranston recently claimed that he was now done with the role. He previously said of possibly appearing as White again:

Everything should come to an end. Everything’s cyclical. Our lives are cyclical. The seasons, trees, everything. And, so, it’s okay to have a beginning, middle, and end, and then let it go. I’m proud of what we did.

It seems though that there is always a little room for Walter White in the world, and there is no reason to believe that Cranston may not bring him out of retirement again if there is a worthwhile cause – or just a good packet of potato chips to promote, come to that. He reteamed with Breaking Bad costar Aaron Paul for a Popcorners Super Bowl commercial, which, similar to his new ads, played around with the world fans became familiar with other six seasons.

Related 7 Reasons You Should Rewatch Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad is one of those rare dramas that are even more rewarding to watch a second time.

While these fun, throwaway returns to the world of meth selling, dangerous cartels, and dodgy lawyers are great little nostalgic nods to the Breaking Bad universe, fans are really wanting to know if there will ever be another spinoff series set in that world. The success of Better Call Saul suggests that the right character can certainly engage an audience, and there have been several rumors that Giancarlo Esposito’s Gus Fring could be next in line for the prequel treatment. For now, though, fans will have to make do with reliving the franchise, which can be found streaming on Netflix.
