Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer have been waiting three years since the announcement that a TV reboot was being planned, and while there has been no word since on that project, it looks like the Buffy sequel may now be arriving in the form of a new trilogy of novels from Disney Hyperion. The first book is called In Every Generation, and is a YA novel written by Kendare Blake to be released in 2022, with a story that focussed on new slayer Frankie, who just happens to be a witch and the daughter of Willow Rosenberg, tying it nicely to the original series timeline and characters.
Talking to Polygon, Blake said, “I have been a Buffy fan since the womb, or at least that’s what it feels like. Being a fan of Buffy was the whole reason for taking on In Every Generation. i have no choice. You don’t say no to Buffy. If you want to visualize the writing of this book, just imagine the iconic scene from Singing in The Rain. Except instead of Gene Kelly, it’s me and instead of that wet street with the lamp post, it’s Sunnydale Cemetery full of vampires.”

While there have been rumors for a while of a revival of the popular series, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar in the title role, all of this was before the merger between Fox and Disney. Now that Buffy is streaming on Disney+ and under their control, the question is would they want to bring back one of Fox’s biggest hits of the past? Considering the new novel is the first to be published by Disney based on a Fox property, it is a pretty good sign that they have not forgotten about Buffy and Co, and if they are looking to bring the Vampire Slayer back to screens in some way, then having a series of novels to work from is a pretty good way to go.
Disney Hyperion’s official synopsis for “In Every Generation.” It reads: “Frankie Rosenberg is passionate about the environment, a sophomore at New Sunnydale High School, and the daughter of the most powerful witch in Sunnydale history. Her mom, Willow, is slowly teaching her magic on the condition that she use it to better the world. But Frankie’s happily quiet life is upended when new girl Hailey shows up with news that the annual Slayer convention has been the target of an attack, and all the Slayers-including Buffy, Faith, and Hailey’s older sister Vi-might be dead. That means it’s time for this generation’s Slayer to be born. But being the first ever Slayer-Witch means learning how to wield a stake while trying to control her budding powers. With the help of Hailey, a werewolf named Jake, and a hot but nerdy sage demon, Frankie must become the Slayer, prevent the Hellmouth from opening again, and find out what happened to her Aunt Buffy, before she’s next. Get ready for a whole new story within the world of Buffy!”
While it may not be the sequel many have been craving for many years, it is certainly a step in the right direction, and with Disney now in charge of the property, it is surely only a matter of time before we see some form of Buffy The Vampire Slayer back on screens again.
