Melissa McCarthy Would Love To Make a Bridesmaids Sequel

The Little Mermaid star Melissa McCarthy would jump at the chance to appear in a Bridesmaids sequel. McCarthy starred in the 2011 comedy alongside Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper, and Wendi McLendon Covey. Bridesmaids follows a down-on-her-luck woman (portrayed by Wiig) who is asked to be the maid of honor at her best friend’s wedding but quickly enters into a laugh-inducing rivalry with one of the maids of honor. McCarthy portrayed Megan Rice and the role earned her critical praise and Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting actress.

McCarthy, who next stars as a modern-day Ursula in the anticipated live action The Little Mermaid, graces the cover of PEOPLE’s Beautiful Issue. For the cover story, the actress spoke fondly of her time working on Bridesmaids: “I would do a Bridesmaids sequel this afternoon, right now. That group of women was the most magical thing ever. Almost all of us were really good friends already. I think it was such a magical time,” she says.

McCarthy even discussed a possible plot line for her character if the film occurred, noting that Megan would be “running her trucking company.” She also included Air Marshall Jon (portrayed by her husband Ben Falcone) in her storyline, saying the two are “obviously private detectives” and “running a dog rescue.” McCarthy also shared her vision of what the duo would wear: “I think they have matching denim jackets with each other’s image painted on it,” she says.

Unfortunately for McCarthy, a sequel doesn’t seem likely as director Paul Feig and film star Wiig don’t seem fully on board. Feig previously stated that a sequel was unlikely, while Wiig said that although she holds the film close to her heart, it’s not a role she intends to revisit. But McCarthy seems like she’s willing to wait until the tide shifts, telling People that even if the cast “all in our nineties and [writers] Kristen [Wiig] and Annie [Mumolo] are like, ‘Should we team back up?’ I’d be like, ‘Yes. Yeah, we should.”

While audiences may have to wait 40 years for a Bridesmaids sequel, they can catch McCarthy as sea witch Ursula when The Little Mermaid premieres May 26.

The film stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, McCarthy as Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, and Art Malik as Grimsby. The movie also features the voices of Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Awkwafina as Scuttle, and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder. The Little Mermaid was written by David Magee and directed by Rob Marshall.

A clip released on April 14 gave a more in-depth look at McCarthy’s version of Ursula, whom the actress says was inspired by drag queens. “There’s a drag queen that lives in me,” McCarthy said. “I’m always right on the verge of going full-time with her… To keep the humor and the sadness and the edginess to Ursula is everything I want in a character — and frankly, everything I want in a drag queen.”

McCarthy first gained recognition for her portrayal of Sookie St. James in Gilmore Girls. She later appeared on Samantha Who? before headlining CBS’ Mike & Molly. Her portrayal of Molly Flynn earned McCarthy an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. After appearing in Bridesmaids, she starred in several films including Identity Thief, The Heat, Tammy, St. Vincent, and The Boss. She earned a second Academy Award nomination in 2019 for her role in Can You Ever Forgive Me?
