Celebrities are bringing their best lingerie out from under. In one of the more bizarre fashion trends to hit Hollywood, stars are choosing to style their underwear as outerwear, giving their skivvies a turn in the spotlight. The look — most recently worn by Julia Fox out and about in New York City — is not only a convenient way to show off your favorite underwear, but also a clever ploy to get the most wear out of expensive designer undies.

The underwear-as-outerwear pipeline started out modestly enough, finding its roots in the nostalgic visible-thong trend, before pushing the boundaries even further with the no-pants wave. As more and more pants left the chat, celebrities got creative with their waist-down dressing, rocking everything from nude briefs to sheer tights. Now, it seems the trend may have finally reached its peak, leading stars to view underwear as an agent of fashion rather than function.

Kendall Jenner wasn’t the first celebrity to step out with underwear over her clothes, but she did make headlines for doing so in a formal setting, attending the 2023 Met Gala afterparty in a sparkly sequin romper with a black thong layered over top. A year prior, Kylie Jenner also showed love to the blossoming trend, arriving at Paris Fashion Week with classic Loewe briefs worn over her black tights. Fox went a more whimsical route with her monochromatic ensemble, wearing high-cut ruffled bloomers over matching white pants. Still, the sheer variety in all of these outfits proves the trend can be achieved with just about any kind of underwear.
