Chris Hemsworth is an old hand when dealing with questions about his Marvel future, and he was on his usual cagey form when speaking about how Avengers: Doomsday could settle his future in the MCU. While there have been many rumors swirling about both his continuation in the role after Avengers: Secret Wars and Thor’s possible demise in the culmination of the Multiverse Saga, Hemsworth wasn’t giving much away about which way things will be going. Speaking to the BBC, Hemsworth said:
“I don’t know. We’ll see where [Avengers: Doomsday] goes. We’re sort of unpacking all of that as we speak and figuring out where each of these characters goes.”
Of course, there have been some fractured relationships in the MCU since the events of Avengers: Endgame. While some characters have reunited in the last five years, most have gone their separate ways, had their own adventures, and in some cases found new teams to be part of – such as Bucky Barnes, who is now part of the New Avengers aka Thunderbolts.
That means Avengers: Doomsday is the first time many MCU actors have worked together in a long time, and for some, this is the first time they have collaborated on a movie. As Hemsworth told Etalk:
“When we parted ways on the last film, we didn’t know if we were going to be doing this again, and here we are. Some of the old crew, like myself, and then a lot of the new folks are coming in.”
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is the Biggest Movie the Russo Brothers Have Worked On
Disney
It seemed for a long time that there would never be a movie with the scope and scale of Avengers: Endgame, a film that brought to an end over a decade of interconnected storytelling with the largest ensemble of superheroes ever put on screen. Now, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will be going one step further, with not only the MCU’s finest coming to save the day, but stars of Fox’s X-Men movies and potentially more surprise variants and lost characters joining the fray at some point.
The Russo Brothers recently hyped Avengers: Doomsday as the biggest movie they have ever been part of, and that probably is not hard to believe. The real question is whether the film can draw in the same kind of audience that the Marvel Cinematic Universe used to attract on a regular basis in the 2010s. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day acting like a precursor to both the two Avengers movies and whatever is released in between.
Many Marvel movies have struggled to pack audiences into cinemas in recent years, even highly rated films like Thunderbolts* and the arrival of The Fantastic Four could deliver even the same level of success that movies like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the heavily-criticized Thor: Love and Thunder achieved three years ago. Can the upcoming run of big Marvel movies turn around the MCU’s fortunes and lead the franchise into a new era of X-Men and renewed box office success? We will find out in the coming years.
