Warner Bros. seemed to want to expand the popular Dark Knight trilogy into its own multi-media franchise, but director Christopher Nolan shut that down. The Dark Knight trilogy was a cultural redefining moment, as the three films changed not only the perception of Batman among general audiences but also the perception of superhero movies. Their success also led to Christopher Nolan becoming one of the most popular and critically acclaimed directors today, who has turned blank check projects like Inception, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer into mainstream blockbusters.
According to a report about DCU by The Wall Street Journal, Warner Bros. reportedly attempted to develop a Robin spin-off television series for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Nolan, however, was adamant about having full creative control over the Batman franchise. He stepped in and convinced Warner Bros. not to move forward with the series. Nolan would later put his spin on Robin in The Dark Knight Rises in the form of Detective John “Robin” Blake, played by Christopher Nolan.

When Was This Robin Spin-Off Planned?

The report does not specify whether and when Warner Bros. was considering making this Robin-centric spin-off. It seems likely that it occurred during the four years between The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. At the time, the studios were struggling with adaptations based on DC Comics, with entries like The Losers, Jonah Hex, and Green Lantern tanking at the box office and panned by critics. The canceled Robin series might have opened the door to Arrow, which debuted on The CW in 2012 and was modeled and inspired by Batman Begins, giving Warner Bros. and DC a Batman-type series with a similar hero.
It is also entirely possible they might have been contemplating the Robin series after The Dark Knight Rises opened in 2012. At the time, the studio was looking to relaunch Superman with Man of Steel and began the process of building a DC film universe. There were even talks about Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice bringing back Nolan’s Batman universe, with Bale potentially returning to the role, though the actor was never approached. The decision was vetoed due to the feeling that his grounded take on the material wouldn’t fit a world that had Superman. Nolan was still heavily involved at Warner Bros. at the time, and the studio, in an attempt not to anger one of their most popular filmmakers, seemingly decided not to move forward with any Dark Knight spin-offs to preserve the director’s intent for a standalone trilogy.
By the time Nolan parted ways with Warner Bros. following the director’s frustration with the studio’s Project Popcorn release plan, the DCEU was already in decline, and the studio was looking to salvage the ship. This eventually led to the hiring of James Gunn and Peter Safran to oversee a new DCU, resulting in the recent release of Superman. Robin is set to have a role in James Gunn’s DCU, with the Damian Wayne incarnation set to star in the Batman-led Brave and the Bold, while Dick Grayson and Jason Todd will be the stars of an animated film titled Dynamic Duo, set for release in 2028.
