David Duchovny Would Do a Californication Movie but Thinks People May Be Too Offended

Summary

  • David Duchovny is open to doing a movie follow-up to his show
    Californication
    .
  • He acknowledges that the cultural landscape has changed and the show’s content may not be well-received today.
  • Duchovny believes the heart of
    Californication
was about family and humor, and he would love to work with the cast again.

In an exclusive chat with MovieWeb, during which we spoke with David Duchovny about his latest film, Adam the First, we took the opportunity to ask him, what with shows like Monk and Luther getting streaming movies, if he would do a movie follow-up for his show Californication. Duchovny, who starred as main character Henry James “Hank” Moody in the Showtime comedy-drama series, was very much on board with the idea…but is not so sure that audiences could stomach it anymore.

“Oh, of course! But I think, culturally, we’ve entered into a tricky place for that show. you know, not that I think that’s not warranted. I mean, I think the changes in culture are warranted for sure. But I think the kind of knee-jerk response to what Californication would be encapsulated as doesn’t work right now.”

While Duchovny doesn’t think Californication would necessarily be tolerated by today’s audience, he does admit that the reasons for that are “warranted.” However, Duchovny always felt the show was about a lot more than Hank and his scandalous situations.

“But then again, I always thought the show was about something else. I always thought it was about the heart of the family there, and that kind of humor. But that’s me shouting against the prevailing winds. So, if your question is ‘Would I want to do it,’ my answer would be yes. I mean, I love working with those people. I love Tom Kapinos. Natascha [McElhone], Pamela [Adlon]. Yes, for sure. I’d love to go back.”

As the lead in Californication, Duchovny played a celebrated novelist and womanizer whose fast living turns out to be slower than he imagined. Throughout the show, he tries to juggle his career, his writer’s block, his relationship with his daughter and his ex-girlfriend, as well as his appetite for beautiful women.

Airing seven seasons on Showtime, and ending back in 2014, Californication was created by Tom Kapinos and starred Natascha McElhone, Madeleine Martin, Evan Handler, and Pamela Adlon alongside Duchovny.

Would you like to see Californication return? Could it, in fact, make for a more interesting show as a now older Hank tries to navigate through the modern era and its inherent sensibilities? Whatever happens, Duchovny is clearly on board for more Hank-based adventures.
