David Lynch’s family will release scripts for unreleased project ‘Unrecorded Night’

David Lynch’s family will release scripts for an unrealised project by the late director called Unrecorded Night, according to a new post by the late director’s daughter.

The beloved late director’s death was announced by his family on social media last year on January 16 2025. Lynch, who is celebrated for seminal films like Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet and the iconic TV series Twin Peaks, revealed his emphysema diagnosis last year, and in November, shared that he required supplemental oxygen to walk.

Lynch had pitched a new series called Unrecorded Night to Netflix according to previous reports. As per Far Out magazine, the show was reportedly approved with rumours that Laura Dern and Naomi Watts could star in the show. However, worked on the project stalled during the Covid-19 pandemic and never resumed.

On Reddit, Lynch’s daughter, Jennifer, replied to a fan who asked if they could see the script for the unreleased show online. In response, Jennifer said the script could be published posthumously.

In the post, Jennifer wrote: “Unrecorded Night scripts are likely to be published by myself and my siblings as a way to offer what could not be realised, to those who would have loved it.”

She continued: “I beg everyone to wait for this release and not hunt down what will likely be unauthorised versions and would soil the beautiful work Dad created.

“Like many millions of people, we are great fans of our father’s work, and wish to see it shared and celebrated in every good way. We know there is a wanting, and we feel the need to fulfil Dad’s gifts as best as possible.”

The show got as far as location scouting, according to the filmmaker’s regular cinematographerLong-time Lynch producer Sabrina Sutherland also called the script “the best thing he ever did”.

Last year, Peter Deming, who worked with him on many projects, revealed it may be released to the public as a book. “I think it was a discussion that began when David started having health problems and whether he would be able to make it” he explained.

Deming, who read the script, had also spoke about it to The Film Stage previously. “It’s definitely its own original thing…it was going to be a lot of episodes, because David really liked what he called ‘the continuing story.’… Twin Peaks: The Return, we weren’t really sure how many episodes there were going to be until it got into post-production, because it wasn’t really written that way; it was written as a 550-page film.”

He added: “So how that was sliced and diced really was a post-production question. Unrecorded Night was the same way. It took me three sittings to read it because it was so thick, but it was definitely not Twin Peaks. It was definitely a really interesting…mystery, I would say.”

It was the one year anniversary of Lynch’s death last month and friends and peers reflected on his seismic influence on the film industry, as well as the changes he’d made to their lives.

“One year without you and still moving through the strange and beautiful universe you opened for me, my dear friend,” wrote Kyle Maclachlan, who starred in five of Lynch’s projects, Dune, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Twin Peaks: The Return.

One year ago today, we lost David Lynch.

Similarly, Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks: The Return) wrote of the ways in which Lynch had changed her life, sharing a photo of them on set and writing: “Your voice, your stories, your laughter—they’re etched into my heart. You changed my life, opened my mind, and left my ears ringing from those joyful bullhorn calls. You knew how to meet darkness with hope, light, and real beauty. I miss you, my friend. Wish you were here.”

Karen O shared a picture of his grave, saying that she was dearly “missing David’s earthly presence” and had left a rose, while fellow musician Sky Ferreira said simply: “we love you”.

The frontwoman of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs had collaborated with Lynch on his 2011 album ‘Crazy Clown Time’, while Ferreira appeared in the 2017 Twin Peaks revival series as Ella.

In NME’s tribute to the late director, Mark Beaumont wrote that the “very word ‘Lynchian’ – denoting a kind of carnivalesque dark surrealism; sometimes fantastical, sometimes macabre, sometimes dreamlike, often eerily everyday – will forever pay tribute to the work of one of cinema’s finest ever auteurs.”
